Dear Friends of CENIT, Queridos Amigos de CENIT,

All of us at the Center for the Working Girl "CENIT" wish you a very happy New Year full of peace and happiness. Also we want to inform you of the latest news at CENIT as always through our quarterly newsletter. Please read on.

Firstly news from the high school Rosa Virginia: Sister Maria Auxiliadora was transferred to another institution of the congregation of the Good Shepherd. She has been replaced by Sister Asunción Quiroz, who we would like to welcome to CENIT and wish her a lot of luck with her work in the high school.

All the girls of Rosa Virginia are participating in Sex Education classes with the aim of preventing unwanted pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Another of the objectives of this class is to raise their self esteem and to prepare them for their futures.

We continue working with the parents too: giving talks etc on topics such as health, family relationships, and children's rights and encourage them to get involved in their children's education.

In the Art and Jewellery-making workshops: Recently there haven't been Art classes because the structure of the program has been changed so that the women are limited to 3 years in this programme. After three years we feel they are ready to use their skills outside of CENIT and also we want to give other women the opportunity to participate in this class. The class is starting up again in January. There is currently only one student, but we are hoping to recruit some more.

We no longer have a Jewellery-making workshop here in CENIT because this was moved to another place belonging to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, where there are many more students who want to learn these skills.

The budget for the lunch at CENIT has been cut and we are currently waiting for the Ministry of Social Wellbeing to approve a new project to be able to increase the budget and give more food to the children and staff of CENIT.

We currently have new members of staff here at CENIT, for example, a new Social Worker, Rocío, for the Adopt-a-Dream programme, Miriam Aponte who is working with the Nuns and Amparito who works in Nivelaciones with the children who didn't have the opportunity to go to school at an early age. There is also a new teacher for the Bakery who gives classes three times a week to the children of the Primary school, ESTAR.

Celebrations for the founding of Quito: CENIT put on a big party to celebrate the founding of Quito, there were games and competitions, dancing and a short play. There were also some surprise presents and some food for everyone.

Christmas parties: we went on a procession through the markets singing Christmas carols and giving out drinks (Chicha) to the people working in the markets. We also had a party for the children, where they enjoyed gifts and good food. They were all really excited and happy!

For the staff and volunteers, there was a party, where we all enjoyed tasting different types of food from around Ecuador and the world. All the volunteers brought a typical dish from their home countries and the staff made dishes typical of their area of Ecuador (the Coast and the mountains)

On Friday 21st December all the staff and four volunteers (Bridget, Albrecht, Adrian and Nicole) took part in a training session and a mass to ask for good things for our work in 2008.

In San Roque we also had a big Christmas party and gave out food and presents to all the children. In San Roque they have found a new schoolroom to use for the project, it is small but okay. Recently one of the families from this program had an accident and suffered severe burns, one of the girls from San Roque also got serious burns and needs more economic help as her treatment is very expensive.

We received various donations to help with the Christmas party. Lucy from England and her colleagues from work collected presents to donate to CENIT and Sara Ciner and her family and friends donated money, which was used to buy some more presents and food, and also went to other projects for example the library, etc. The police organization, Fundebip, donated sweets, which were distributed to the parents at the school for parents.

We also used a donation from a group of Italian volunteers in order to prepare a special Christmas dinner for all the children. The Bakery "La Unión" donated 700 bread rolls to give to the children during the celebrations of Quito.

Quienes hacemos el Centro de la Niña Trabajadora y su Familia "CENIT" les queremos desear un feliz año Nuevo lleno de paz y felicidad, también queremos informales a través de la revista trimestral las ultimas noticias de CENIT, detallamos a continuación.

Sobre el colegio Rosa Virginia — Hermana Maria Auxiliadora fue trasladada a otra Institución del Buen Pastor y su reemplazo es Hna. Asunción Quiroz, le damos la mas cordial de las bienvenida y suerte con su trabajo en el colegio.

Todas las niñas del Rosa Virginia están recibiendo clases de Sexualidad con la finalidad de prevenir embarazos no deseados y enfermedades infectocontagiosas, otro de los objetivos de esta clase es elevar la autoestima de las niñas y que estén preparadas para cualquier situación es estos casos.

Continuamos con la capacitación para los padres de Familia en temas de salud, relaciones familiares, derechos de los niños y en el proceso pedagógico de sus hijos.

En los proyectos de Arte y Bisutería. Arte no hemos tenido clases los últimos meses porque se cambio la estructura por ejemplo las madres que tienen tres años ya no pueden continuar en el proyecto, ellas de algún modo están capacitadas para enfrentar la vida, además debemos dar oportunidad a otras mujer para que se capaciten.

Bisutería, ya no tenemos porque se trasladó a otro lugar del Buen Pastor, donde hay muchas alumnas que quieren aprender este oficio.

En el comedor se redujó la alimentación hasta esperar que el Ministerio de Bienestar Social nos apruebe el nuevo proyecto para dar de comer a más niños/as y personal de CENIT.

Actualmente tenemos nuevo personal trabajando en CENIT como: Nueva Trabajadora Social para el programa Invierta en Una Vida que se llama Rocío, Tenemos a Miriam Aponte que trabaja en el área de la Comunidad de CENIT, Amparito que trabaja como profesora del programa de nivelación con los niños/as que no tuvieron la oportunidad de ir a temprana edad a la escuela.

También tenemos el profesor del Taller de Panadería que da clases tres veces a la semana a los niños/as de la Escuela Taller Estar.

Fiestas de Quito: CENIT realizó una gran fiesta para celebrar la fundación de Quito, se realizaron juegos, concurso, baile y una dramatización en honor a la fecha. Hubo un poco de comida regalos sorpresa.

Fiestas de Navidad, fuimos por todos los mercados para cantar al niño Jesús y dar una bebida (Chicha) también se realizo una gran fiesta que se dio regalos y comida a todos los niños/as. Todos contentos y emocionados.

Se realizó una gran cena con mucha comida típica, donde se disfrutaron los educadores y voluntarios de CENIT. Todos los voluntarios llevaron la comida típica de su región y de igual forma los educadores de CENIT tenían comida típica de Sierra y Costa.

El viernes 21 todos los educadores tuvieron una convivencia y una misa para pedir cosas buenas para el nuevo año en el trabajo, también participaron cuatro voluntarios como: Bridget, Alberto, Adrián y Nicole.

En el programa de San Roque también realizaron fiesta Navideña y dieron comida, regalos a todos los niños/as, ellos tienen un nuevo local es un lugar pequeño pero es mejor que nada. Actualmente una familia de este programa tubo un accidente que sufrieron varias quemaduras graves, una de sus hijas es del programa de San Roque y también salio afectada tiene quemaduras muy grave y necesita ayuda economiza ya que las medicamentos son muy caros.

Hemos recibido varias donaciones para celebrar la fiesta navideña. Lucy de Inglaterra recolecto regalos de sus compañeros de trabajo para donar a CENIT, Sara Ciner dono dinero de sus amigos y familiares, dinero que fue usado para comprar mas regalos y comida , también se han financiado otros programas como la biblioteca, etc. Otra de las donaciones fue la Policía de la organización Fundebip quienes donaron caramelos los mismos que fueron entregados a los padres de familia de la escuela para padres. Cntamos con una donación de voluntarios Italianos, para realizar una cena navideña.

Panadería la Unión donó 700 panes para dar a nuestros niños/as.

From the markets… / Desde los mercados…

Mayorista

Deep in the south of Quito, Mayorista is a market where every fruit and vegetable that grows in the country, is sold. Our children in the market are mostly 2 or 3 years old, some are 7 to 9, but that is rare. Two of the youngest ones have just started speaking and sing now with the others. The older children always help us to give out soap, toothbrushes and paper. Recently, we introduced them to animals, the days of the week and the months, which worked really well. The newest thing is "Señor Diente", (Mr. Tooth) a big model jaw with which we demonstrate how to brush teeth in the right way. The kids love it and listen to us with big eyes. Afterwards, everyone shows us and each other proudly, how clean their teeth are. One of our children, who is 9 years old, didn't go to school and was very sad about that. Now finally, she goes to school in CENIT and can't wait everyday to go and learn.

All of the children need a lot of attention and sometimes fool around to get it, but usually everyone participates in our games.

The mothers seem to be interested in what we are doing as they ask where exactly we are playing, what we are doing and which countries us volunteers are from.

En el sur de Quito, encontramos el mercado Mayorista donde se vende todas las frutas y legumbres que se producen en el país. La mayoría de los niños del mercado tienen 2-3 años y otros 7-9.

Dos de los más pequeños empiezan a hablar y ahora cantan con los otros niños. Los más grandes siempre nos ayudan a repartir el jabón, cepillos y papeles. Últimamente les estamos enseñando a ellos los animales, los días de la semana y los meses del año, lo cual funciono muy bien.

Lo nuevo que estamos enseñando es el cuento del "Señor Diente", lo hacemos teórico y practico con una dentadura grande demostramos como cepillarse los dientes apropiadamente. Los niños les encanta y nos escuchan haciendo gestos con sus ojos muy grandes. Después, cada uno de los niños muestra orgullosamente sus dientes limpios.

Una de nuestras niñas que tiene 9 años, no estaba en la escuela y por eso estaba muy triste. Por fin, va a la escuela en CENIT y cada día esta ansiosa por ir allá.

Todos los niños necesitan mucha atención y a veces son traviesos, pero en general, todos participan cuando jugamos.

Las madres están muy interesadas en lo que hacemos, porque nos preguntan donde exactamente jugamos y de que países somos.

Cisnes

During the last few months, we had very few children attending the project so we decided to work together with another market to make the dynamic a bit more interesting.

During the month of December, Cisnes market continues to work with Caballos market. Every day, we have about 12-16 kids who are between 3-11 years old attending the project. Every week the social worker speaks with the families with the objective to find new kids.

We made good use of the Christmas period to propose new activities to do with Christmas. We made decorations for the house and Christmas cards to offer to the families. The kids enjoy this kind of activity.

During this month, three volunteers of the two markets are leaving. We hope that new volunteers will come soon to help to this program.

Friday the 14th of December, we organized a walk for the kids of these markets. We went to the Carolina Park, we took the bus from near CENIT and when we got to the park, the kids had a picnic and had time to play. This activity was really good, all the kids behaved really well and respected the rules of conduct and they gained a lot from being away from Camal market for the morning.

Durante estos últimos meses, tuvimos pocos niños y por eso decidimos juntar dos mercados para que la dinámica sea más interesante.

En este mes de Diciembre, el mercado Cisnes sigue trabajando con el mercado Caballos. Cada día tenemos entre 12-16 niños de 3-11 anos.

Cada semana, la trabajadora social habla con las familias con la finalidad de de buscar nuevos niños.

Aprovechamos la temporada Navideña para realizar actividades creativas en cuanto a la fecha. Hicimos decoraciones para la casa, cartas para regalar a las familias. Los niños aprecian mucho participar.

Durante este mes de Diciembre, tres voluntarios de estos dos mercados se van. Ojala vengan rápidamente nuevos voluntarios para ayudar en este proyecto.

El día viernes 14 de Diciembre, ¡se realizo un paseo, que fue organizado par los niños de Cisnes y Caballos. Fuimos al Parque de la Carolina, cogimos el bus desde CENIT, y allá ellos pudieron comer, y tuvieron tiempo para jugar. Esta actividad estuvo muy buena, todos los niños se portaron muy bien, respetaron las reglas de conducta y disfrutaron mucho de estar un poco lejos del mercado Camal.

Santa Maria

The kids of Santa María market are generally well behaved, polite, and willing to come and play. Over the last few weeks (November-December) we have been learning the alphabet, practising a new letter each day. We found that the children particularly enjoy, and are good at tracing over letters before writing them themselves. We have also started to introduce a "circle of love" where the kids have to say one nice thing about the person next to them, or give them a hug. This is help to create a strong bond between the children and to create a safe and loving atmosphere in which to work.

During the Christmas period, we started using our "painting time" to do Christmas activities. One thing the children especially enjoyed was creating Christmas decorations out of play-dough. They love painting, and one of our successes was a "No violence" poster, which we finger painted for no violence day.

Some of the children are very quiet, and Mimi in particular seems to be in her own world half the time. However, we have discovered that activities, such as chasing bubbles, immediately wake them up and they turn into completely different children.

We have had no major problems, sometimes the boys fight, but it is more play fighting than for any other reason. The parents are all extremely nice and grateful, although a couple get angry if you accidentally miss their stall in the morning.

To conclude, the children are a joy to work with, always willing to listen and help, and adore being taught and loved.

Los niños/as del Mercado Santa María generalmente se comportan muy bien y son muy amables. A ellos les gusta venir a jugar y aprender. En las últimas semanas (Noviembre-Diciembre) hemos estudiado con ellos el alfabeto, cada día una nueva letra. Nos parece que ellos les gustan mucho esta actividad, especialmente cuando pueden trazar las letras antes de escribirla.

También hemos empezando a introducirles la actividad de "circulo de cariño". Eso significa que los niños /as tienen que decir alguna palabra bonita sobre su compañera o compañero de su lado o darle un abrazo. Con la finalidad de crear lazos fuertes entre los niños y niñas, lo que también nos ayuda es trabajar en un ambiente más calido y cariñoso

Como ya estamos en la temporada de navidad, hemos utilizado "el tiempo de las pinturas" para preparar cosas navideñas. Los niños y niñas les gustó mucho hacer las decoraciones de navidad. A los niños/as les encanta pintar y dibujar, así uno de nuestro éxito era hacer pinturas de mano para el día de de la "No violencia".

Algunos de los niños y niñas son muy tranquilos, por ejemplo Mimi quien está pensando todo el tiempo. Aunque descubrimos cuando hacemos actividades como jugar pelota o hacer burbujas estos niños y niñas se convierten en otras personas y juegan con mucho ánimo.

Nunca tenemos problemas graves con ellos, unas veces se pelean pero más bien sólo por jugar, y sus padres también son muy amables y agradecidos. Algunas veces se enojan si por casualidad cuando no pasamos por sus puestos de venta por la mañana, pero nada más.

Podemos decir que estos niños y niñas del mercado son muy amables y amistosos, siempre les gusta escucharnos y aprender nuevas cosas, así es un placer estar con ellos.

Play Therapy

At the moment, we always have about four kids in play therapy. Axel and his older sister Nicole are still the ones who are the most difficult to handle. Most of the time, they pretend that they are not willing to come, so they will get sweets or money from their parents. As this is not what we are aiming for (that the kids only come if they get gifts), we try to prohibit this.

Jordan, a three year old boy, has recently joined us and is always happy when he is with us.
Chris and Yasmin are the ones who come most frequently. The play therapy programme is not really necessary for Yasmin, as she already goes to a kindergarten and knows more than the others. For her younger brother Chris however, the play therapy seems to be of use. It is hard for him to concentrate and keep going with his work, so we are trying to improve that.

For Christmas, we decorated stars with them which they gave to their parents. Furthermore, we would like to work on a little Christmas tree out of green paper and we hope that they will enjoy this as well.

Siempre tenemos cerca de cuatro niños en la Tutoría de Juego, últimamente Axel y su hermana mayor Nicole todavía son los más difíciles en su comportamiento. La mayoría de las veces, fingen que no quieren venir con nosotros para recibir dulces o monedas de sus padres. Como esto no es lo que queremos (que los niños solamente vengan y que reciban regalos), intentamos prohibirles.
Desde hace poco tiempo, Jordán, un niño de tres años, viene con nosotros y siempre está feliz cuando viene a la Tutoría.

Chris y Yasmín son los niños que vienen con regularidad. La Tutoría de Juegos no es necesaria para Yasmín porque ya va a un Jardín y sabe más cosas que los otros. Pero en cambio su hermano menor Chris parece que si es útil, es difícil concentrarse y continuar con un trabajo. Intentamos mejorarlo.

Porque solamente falta una semana hasta Navidad, hicimos estrellas de papel que los niños obsequiaron a sus padres. Además, vamos a trabajar con árboles de Navidad de papel verde y esperamos que les guste también.

Kinder

Three and a half months have passed since the start of the New Year in the kindergarten. Many of the kids have changed during this time, some have improved and some have not changed in their behaviour at all.

So far, we have learned to write the numbers one to four and the vowels "a" and "e". While teaching the children new things, one can see a huge difference between them. A few already know how to write some letters or can even write their names while others still struggle with the first things we learned. Some of them also get their homework done by their parents and therefore stay way behind the others.

When the kids leave the kindergarten to go to school, they will have to pass an exam to show what they have learned. If they fail, they will not be allowed to start school. We passed a little "test-exam" with them to see how they do. As they are only five years old, it was hard for them to concentrate over a long time period without being allowed to check if they are doing everything right. Luckily, there is still a lot of time left for them to get properly prepared for school.

Pasaron casi cuatro meses desde el comienzo de un año nuevo en el Jardín. Mientras tanto, muchos de los niños han cambiado. Algunos han mejorado y otros no han cambiado su comportamiento.

Hasta ahora, hemos aprendido como se escriben los números del 1 al 4 y las vocales "a" y "e". Enseñamos a los niños cosas nuevas, se puede observar una diferencia grande entre ellos. Algunos ya saben escribir letras, a veces incluso su nombre, mientras que otros todavía tienen problemas con las primeras cosas aprendidas. También hay padres que hacen los deberes de sus hijos lo que significa que estos niños se quedan de atrás de sus compañeros.

Cuando los niños ingresen a una escuela, tienen que pasar un examen en que muestran lo que han aprendido. Sino pasan, no serán permitidos y no podrán empezar la escuela. Hicimos un examen pequeño para ver como lo hacen. Ya que solamente tienen cinco años, era un poco difícil para los niños concentrarse por mucho tiempo sin que pudieran preguntar si lo hacen bien. Por suerte, todavía tienen mucho tiempo para prepararse para la escuela, esperamos que todo funcione bien.

English classes at CENIT / Clases de Inglés en CENIT…

English Classes: ESTAR

Most of the students attend class regularly although there are some that don't and that makes it a lot more difficult for them to learn.

In the first grade, the students' abilities vary greatly, some students can read and write and because of that their progress is fast. On the other hand, some of the other students can't read or write and many things have to be repeated, which slows down the class. Sometimes I am not sure if it makes sense to teach English to children, who can't even read or write in their own language, Spanish.

The second grade is by far the class that is progressing at the fastest pace. I think the reason for this is due to the strict enforcement of rules in the classroom by the teacher.

The third grade is having some serious problems, considering that they are in their final year of the "ESTAR" primary school. Without a supporting teacher, it is difficult to create a comfortable learning atmosphere. I am trying to solve this problem, but there isn't always someone available at least to enforce some rules in the classroom.

I am concerned that if this problem is not solved quickly, many students won't pass the third grade.

To sum up, all the students are willing to learn. There are just some disciplinary problems, which hopefully can be improved soon.

Los chicos vienen a las clases regularmente, aún hay casos en los cuáles no atienden siempre y por eso tienen mas dificultades en aprender. La capacidad de cada estudiante en primer grado es muy diferente. Hay unos que pueden leer, escribir y por eso aprenden rápido. Hay otros que no pueden leer ni escribir.

A veces tengo que preguntarme si tiene sentido enseñar inglés a niños que no pueden escribir español.

El grado segundo es ahora más avanzado porque yo creo de las reglas estrictas de la profesora.
El tercer grado tiene problemas serios.

Es imposible de crear un ambiente para aprender cuando no hay otro profesor para que les cuide. Estoy tratando de solucionar este problema pero no hay siempre otras personas libres para cuidarles. Si este problema se queda, muchos estudiantes no podrán pasar el grado tercer.

En total, todos los estudiantes quieren aprender solo hay unos problemas disciplinarios que deben haber solucionados.

English Classes: Rosa Virginia

Just last week, the 141 girls in the 8th, 9th and 10th classes of the Rosa Virginia high school (RV) had their first term tests in what has turned out to be an eventful first term with varying results.

The girls in the 8th grade had struggled all term with the verb to be, there is / there are, animals and the time, and as it turns out, the results were rather poor. A lot of the girls need extra tests to pass the term, and changes should be considered for the second term to make them learn more.

In the 9th grade, the results are better, the girls are more motivated in class and their academic results are better. Only a few girls need an extra test to pass the first term. They also did the verb to be, there is/ there are, the articles a, an and the and the difference between some and any.

The 10th graders are doing even better. None of the girls need an extra test, and teaching them has been a pleasure since they're all quiet and seem sincerely interested in learning. The 10th graders have been learning much the same subjects as in the 9th grade, although the exercises have been tougher and they also had the verb have / has. As opposed to some of the other courses they seem ready to start learning new things when the second term starts.

Be sure to check in on the girls of RV in three months time to read how the second term turned out, hopefully we'll only have good news for you next time.

La semana pasada las 141 chicas de los 8º, 9º y 10º del colegio Rosa Virginia (RV) entregaron sus pruebas del fin del primer trimestre que por lo visto fue un trimestre bastante movido y con resultados variables.

Con los 8º hicimos cosas fundamentales como el verbo to be, there is / there are, los animales y la hora, temas que las chicas encontraron bastante difíciles algo que quedo claro tras corregir las pruebas trimestrales. Muchas de las chicas necesitan pruebas adicionales para aprobar el trimestre y hay que considerar cambios para el trimestre que viene para ver si podemos ser más exitosos.

En los 9º los resultados han sido mejores. Las chicas están más motivadas y los resultados académicos son mejores. Solo unas pocas chicas necesitan pruebas adicionales para aprobar el trimestre. Los 9º hicieron el verbo to be, there is /there are, los artículos a, an y the, y las diferencias entre some y any.

Las chicas de los 10º están mejor. Ninguna de las chicas necesita una prueba adicional para pasar el curso y ser su profesor ha sido un placer dado que las chicas se comportan bien y están interesadas en aprender. Los 10º han aprendido mucho de las mismas cosas que los 9º, aunque con ejercicios más difíciles y también han aprendido el verbo have/has. Al contrario de algunos de los otros cursos, los de 10º parecen estar listos para aprender nuevas cosas ahora que empieza el nuevo trimestre.

Eso es todo por ahora, no olvides volver a comprobar el progreso de las chicas en tres meses cuando acabe el segundo trimestre.

Medical Services at CENIT / Servicios médicos en CENIT

Street Clinic / Clínica de la Calle

Over the past 3 months there have been 3 volunteers working with Nancy in the street clinic. Aureli from France returned home on the 17th December and Shannon from Canada is working until Christmas. Beth from Scotland will stay until end of January.

We are currently monitoring women's health in the markets on a weekly basis through measurement of blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Women are informed about the medical services at CENIT and given basic medications as well as advice on nutrition and other health issues.

A database has been created to record the weekly blood pressures and blood glucose levels of the women in each of the four markets visited. Individual sheets were created for women in Santa Maria and El Camal who suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes in order to monitor their health more closely. By taking a more detailed case history of these women it is possible to gain a better understanding of the factors behind these health problems.

In January three nurses will be arriving to volunteer in the Street clinic which should hopefully have a positive impact on the work of the clinic and what can be achieved. Many of the health problems suffered by the women in the markets stem largely from a lack of knowledge regarding basic health issues including hygiene, nutrition and sexual health. Creation of educational materials and informal classes with the women in the markets could therefore be an important part of the work of the street clinic.

Durante los últimos tres meses tres voluntarias han trabajado en la Clínica de Calle con Nancy. Aureli de Francia volvió el 17 de este mes, Shannon de Canada se quedo hasta Navidad y Beth de Escocia va a trabajar hasta fines de enero.

Estamos pendientes de la salud de las mujeres en los mercados una vez a la semana, les la presión arterial y la cantidad de azúcar en la sangre. Se informa a la gente sobre los servicios de salud en CENIT, la gente recibe medicamentos básicos y consejos en nutrición y otras cuestiones referentes a salud.

Fue construida una base de datos para archivar los niveles de glucosa y presión arterial de las mujeres en los cuatro mercados que visitamos. Hojas individuales fueron hechas para las mujeres en Santa Maria y El Camal que sufren de la presión alta o diabetes para poder conocer mejor la evolución de sus enfermedades. Con la forma de medir los datos mas cerca podemos llegar a un mejor entendimiento de los factores que causan la enfermedad.

En Enero tres enfermeras van a llegar para hacer voluntariado en la Clínica de Calle. Esto debería tener un efecto positivo en el trabajo de la Clínica. Muchos de las enfermedades de las cuales la gente en los mercados sufre provienen de una falta de conocimiento sobre temas básicos de salud, incluyendo higiene, nutrición y salud sexual. Crear material educativo y dar clases informales a la gente en los mercados sobre salud, podría ser una parte importante del trabajo de la Clínica de Calle.

Dentist Program / Programa Dentista

After a chaotic period without a dentist for the program everything fell into place. In the middle of October the dentists from "charity anywhere" came with their mobile equipment. They treated almost half of all the CENIT children including CEA and they want to come back in the near future. After we lost the option of taking the children to the dentist in "El Camal", we had to try a number of different dentists until we managed to find a new, friendly and cheap one for our children. Our new dentist is in the "Centro de Salud", which is very close to CENIT and he's able to treat two children every day. The only problem was that he took vacation for one month until December. Therefore we tried to take the children to the Central University of Ecuador (Ecuador's biggest public university). After a lot of administration work we got the contract signed for a low budget treatment, especially for charities, at the university. So we can start to take eight to ten children weekly, to receive treatment from students who in their last semester. We also bought model jaws for the market programs and taught the volunteers how to teach the children good teeth brushing, since this is the best prevention for bad teeth.

Después de un tiempo caótico sin un buen dentista para el programa todo fue arreglando. En la mitad de Octubre los Dentistas de "charity anywhere" (una Fundación para la salud) vinieron con su equipo transportable. Ellos trataron casi la mitad de todos los niños de CENIT incluyendo CEA y quieren volver en el futuro. Después perdimos a la dentista de "El Camal" y tuvimos que tratar a los niños de otros modos hasta que encontramos un nuevo, Dentista es bueno, amable y barato para nuestros niños. Nuestro nuevo dentista esta cerca de un "Centro de Salud" y trata dos niños cada día. El único problema es que se fue de vacaciones por un mes hasta Diciembre. Por eso tratamos de llevar a los niños a la Universidad Central del Ecuador (la universidad pública más grande del Ecuador). Después de mucho trabajo administrativo recibimos la licencia para un tratamiento especial para fundaciones en la universidad. Así podemos empezar a llevar entre ocho y diez niños cada semana a partir de la próxima semana al tratamiento realizado por los estudiantes del último semestre. También compramos algunas dentaduras para los mercados y capacitamos a los voluntarios que enseñen a los niños a cepillarse bien los dientes.

Clinic / Clínica

These last months have been very prosperous for the clinic. We continue to give the same medical and gynaecological attention to the people of CENIT and the district El Camal. After there were some minor difficulties with the gynaecological schedule, the gynaecologist is now coming every other Wednesday in the morning. Recently we have had to say goodbye to two volunteers who have worked a lot in the clinic and street clinic: Shannon from Canada and Aurelie from France. We are looking forward to being able to improve the medical services of the clinic and street clinic with the arrival of three trained nurses from the United States, Great Britain, and Australia.

In these months we have also had many educational programmes: Parent's classes and Sexual Education classes for the students of the high school. In the parent's classes, as always, we have been giving a small talk about a general health subject. We have talked about fever and given an entire class about nutrition, as many people in the markets and especially the patients of the clinic suffer from diseases due to poor nutrition. The clinic staff is very happy that we could finally realize the first sexual education class this week and that we will have one hour per week with every class until the end of the school year.

Estos ultimos tres meses han sido muy prosperos para la clínica. Seguimos dando la misma atención médica y ginecológica a la gente de CENIT y del barrio El Camal. Hemos tenidos problemas con el horario de atención ginecológica, La Doctora. Viene ahora los miércoles cada 15 días al mes. En estos tiempos se marcharon dos voluntarias que han trabajado mucho en la clínica de CENIT y clínica de calle: Shannon de Canada y Aurelie de Francia.

Estamos esperando que con la llegada de tres enfermeras de EE.UU., Gran Brettania y Australia, podemos mejorar los servicios de la clínica de CENIT y clínica de calle.

En estos meses tuvimos muchos programas educativas también: Clases de padres y clases de educación sexual para los estudiantes del Colegio RV. En las reuniones de padres, como siempre, dimos una cápsula sobre un tema de salud general. Así hicimos una charla sobre lo que es la fiebre y también dimos una clase entera sobre la nutrición, ya que mucha gente en los mercados y sobre todo los pacientes de la Clínica sufren de enfermedades debido a una mala alimentación. El personal de la Clínica está muy contento que finalmente pudimos realizar la primera clase de educación sexual en esta semana y que tendremos una hora por semana con todos los cursos hasta fines del año escolar.

Homework help sessions / Ayuda con las tareas diarias

CEA in the morning

Usually we have more than 20 children in the CEA project (in the morning). It depends on the day; sometimes there are more than 30. Almost all of the children come to CENIT first and we give them the "colación" (or snack) at 9.10. After this, we all walk in a group down to CEA (at 9.30).

In CEA, the children are sitting in groups now. There are 4 big tables. One table is for the children of 2nd and 3rd grades one for those of 4th and 5th grade and one for those of 6th and 7th grade. The children who don't have homework are either playing outside or they stay inside and work with the teacher Juan Carlos.

On Mondays, hardly any of the children have homework and sometimes we all go together to the park.

On the other days, the teachers are always sitting at the same table and the volunteers work every day with the same children, this way we get to know the children better and understand their problems better.

At the end of the session, we often do something together in a group, for example we sing together.

At 11.30 we start to tidy up the room. For each day of a week there is a list of the children who have to tidy up.

Then we go back to CENIT for lunch.

En CEA en la mañana tenemos normalmente más de 20 niños (depende del día, a veces hay más de 30). Casi todos los niños llegan antes a CENIT y les damos la colación a las 9.10.

Después nos vamos en orden a CEA (a las 9 y media). En CEA los niños se sientan ahora en grupos. Hay 4 mesas grandes, lo cual se comparte por una mesa por dos niveles o grados por Ej. Una para 2º y 3º, otra para 4º y 5º y también para 6º y 7º. Los niños que no tienen deberes se van afuera y juegan o se quedan a dentro y hacen algunas cosas con el profesor Juan Carlos.

Los lunes por lo general no hay que hacer deberes y a veces nos vamos en al parque con todo el grupo. Los otros días, los profesores se sientan siempre a la misma mesa y por eso trabajamos cada día con los mismos niños. Entonces nos conocemos un poco mejor y logramos conocer que niño tiene dificultad.

Al final muchas veces hacemos algo en grupo, por ejemplo cantamos.

A las 11.30 empezamos con la limpieza. Por cada día de la semana hay una lista de niños que tienen que limpiar.

Después los niños se forman afuera y nos vamos en orden a CENIT para el almuerzo.

CEA in the afternoon

Every afternoon there are a lot of children who have to do their homework. The children are from six to twelve years old. We start at 2 pm and finish at 4.30 pm more or less. The children are always full of enthusiasm. Most of them don't need a lot of help. Some of them do. I really like to help them with their homework. I feel useful at CEA. In CEA, there are five volunteers working, one teacher and 2 psychologists. Sometimes when the kids have finished their homework, there's time to sing with them or do other activities.

The kids are very sweet and always happy. When they need to clean the room, at the end of the day, they're never complaining. After cleaning, they get the food we brought. Most of the time it's fruit. At the end of the day we walk back to CENIT.

Cada tarde hay muchos niños quie tienen que hacer sus deberes. Los niños tienen seis hasta doce anos de edad. Iniciamos a las 2 y terminamos a las 4.30 en la tarde mas o menos. Hay niños que no necesitan mucha ayuda, otros si. Me gusta mucho ayudar a los niños. Pienso que los voluntarios son necesario.

En CEA trabajan cinco voluntarios, una profesora y dos psicologos. A veces, cuando los niños terminan los deberes, hay tiempo para cantar con ellos o hacer otros actividados. Los niños son muy amables y siempre estan felices. Si ellos tienen que limpiar, al fin del dia, nunca se quejan. Despues de la limpieza reciben la colación, amenudo la colación es frutas y despues vamos a CENIT.

Other Programs / Otras Programas

Library

When I came to CENIT two months ago, there was no one in charge of the library, and it was in quite a state of disarray. The first step I took was to organize the library, which was, plainly put, a complete mess. I went through piles of books and put them back into the numerical order in which they once were. I also sorted through numerous boxes of mismatched puzzle pieces, and from the puzzles I could salvage, I labelled and put them into individual plastic bags. Once the library was spic and span, I had to lay down some serious rules to prevent the children from running amok and completely destroying the place. For example, there is a maximum capacity of 10 children in the library at once (which is plenty), and if a child does not behave, he or she has to leave the library. I have been pretty strict about enforcing the rules, and the children have been responding well.

Some library programs that have begun in the past two months: For instance, I have begun a library lending system, in which the high school girls can take out a certain number of books when they present me with their identification card. I am also working with the volunteers from the Mayorista and Caballos markets. For the past two months, the volunteers have been bringing the market children to the library on Mondays and Thursdays to listen to a story, draw, or just play. The market children really look forward to coming every week.

All in all, with so many things to do in the library, it is a pretty popular place to be. The CENIT children anticipate my arrival every morning, because that means the library will be open, and it is always crowded with kids during recess. It is a great resource that CENIT has, and I think it is being utilized often and well.

Cuando llegue a CENIT hace dos meses, no había un responsable de la biblioteca, y estaba en bastante desorden. Mi primer paso era ordenar la biblioteca, que era, simplemente un lió completo. Ordené los libros en forma numérica en que estaban antes. También yo mire por numerosas cajas que contenía muchas piezas de rompecabezas mezcladas. De lo que podía salvar, lo clasifique en fundas plásticas, para que pudiera mantenerse ordenados en el futuro. Una vez que la biblioteca estaba limpiecita, yo tenía que crear algunas reglas firmes para que los niños no destruyeran el lugar. Por ejemplo, hay un límite de diez niños en la biblioteca a la vez (lo cual es muy numeroso), y si un niño se porta mal varias veces, tiene que irse de la biblioteca. He sido bastante firme con poner estas reglas, y los chicos han están respondiendo bien.

Hay algunos programas de la biblioteca que han empezado durante los últimos dos meses. Por ejemplo, empecé un sistema de prestar libros, en que las chicas del colegio pueden tomar un cierto numero de libros, siempre y cuando me entregan su cedulas de identidad. También, trabajo con algunos voluntarios de los mercados de Mayorista y Caballos. Durante los últimos meses, los voluntarios traen a los niños de los mercados a la biblioteca los lunes y los jueves para escuchar un cuento, dibujar, o simplemente jugar. Los niños de los mercados siempre se alegran a de venir a la biblioteca cada semana.

Cada semana se hacen tantas cosas en la biblioteca, es un lugar popular y los niños de CENIT esperan mi llegada cada mañana, porque significa que la biblioteca estará abierta. También, durante la hora del recreo, siempre esta llena con niños. La biblioteca es un gran recurso que tiene CENIT, y la usamos con frecuencia.

Adopt-A-Dream / Invierte-en-una-Vida

During the last weeks we have been able to accept four new children into our program. We have already had the opportunity to go and visit them in their houses in order to get an impression of how they live. Apart from that, we talked to their parents about their current situation and the problems they are facing.

We were also able to help a girl who used to be sponsored through the Adopt a Dream Program, but is now pregnant. So her sponsor parents gave money to her so that she could buy clothes for the baby and to be able to pay for the pre-natal medical check-ups.

Furthermore we're trying to help two girls from the program who don't want to live at home anymore. We already talked to CENIT's psychologist about this.

One of these girls said she had been raped. At the moment we're trying to clarify the case. We have talked to the mother, to our psychologist who has already talked to the girl and to the police. Of course we are also working on the case of the other girl, but in this case the mother isn't willing to collaborate. For this reason, the police are threatening to close the case without punishing anybody.

One of the new children seems to have a mental disability and for this reason, we are trying to clarify whether the boy has to attend a special school or whether he can attend the primary school at CENIT.

Durante las últimas semanas pudimos acoger cuatro niños más en nuestro programa. Ya les visitamos en sus casas conocer su forma de vida y además hablamos con sus padres sobre la situación y problemas que tienen.

También ayudamos a una niña que estaba en el programa Invierte-en-una-vida pero ahora está embarazada. Sus padrinos la regalaron dinero para que pueda comprar ropa para el bebé y para los exámenes médicos.

Aparte de esto estamos tratando de ayudar a dos niñas del programa que no quieren vivir con sus familias. Hablamos con la psicóloga de CENIT que nos ayuden.

Una de esas niñas dijo que había sido violada. Por el momento tratamos de poner en claro el caso. Hablamos con la madre, con la psicóloga lo cual hablaron con la niña y con la policía. Por supuesto nos preocupamos también de los otros casos. Pero en este caso es especial, la madre de la niña no quiere colaborar y por eso la policía amenaza cerrar el caso sin castigar a al culpable.

Uno de los nuevos niños tiene una deficiencia mental. Por eso ahora tenemos que aclarar si tiene que ir a una escuela especial o si puede asistir a la escuela primaria de CENIT.

Leather Class

For the most part, the girls are attending the class regularly. We have had to slow down the production pace because of the difficulties we have in selling the products at the same rate as the girls are able to produce them. We are doing our best to improve this situation by continually looking for ways to improve the sales and expand the market.

The social situation between the girls and me has improved a lot. Now everybody gets on really well with each other.

I have taken them a couple times to the park and to eat ice cream. They always really enjoy these trips and the trips definitely helped to create a comfortable atmosphere for everybody. To sum up, the social situation is very good and the sales side of the project needs some improvement.

Las chicas vienen regularmente para elaborar los productos grandes. Tuvimos que bajar la producción porque la situación de vender es difícil, estamos tratando de mejorarla. La relación entre las chicas y yo ha mejorado mucho. Todos nos caemos muy bien. Fuimos algunas veces al parque y comer helado.

Nos disfrutamos muchos lo cual hace un ambiente agradable. Y en el ambiente social casi no se puede mejorar pero ojala la situación económica mejore pronto.

San Roque in the morning / San Roque en las mañanas

During the last few months there have been many changes in San Roque. In October we had to leave our previous location as the contract run out. The teachers and the volunteers had to clean and paint the old premises and look for a new location. During this time CEA San Roque was closed. A new location was found in the school next to the market. Following the reopening of CEA only a few children attended. However once it became more widely known that CEA had moved and reopened the number of children coming steadily increased.

CEA San Roque is divided into two groups, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the morning the children are generally younger and don't attend school, while in the afternoon, the children are all in school. This influences the way the teachers and volunteers work with the different groups.

Since the reopening of CEA the psychologist and coordinator (Esteban and Patricia) set up monthly workshops with the parents where important issues are discussed.

The tradition of going to "la casa de la niñez" (the house of childhood) every Friday, which the children thoroughly enjoy, continues.

For the celebrations of the foundation of Quito, the afternoon children designed a traditional dance which they performed at CENIT. This was a big day for the children who all danced extremely well.

En San Roque nos dedicamos con los deberes y tambien a otras actividades recreativas . Por ejemple por las Fiestas de Quito los niños prepararon un baile traditional. Los niños estaban vestidos con ropa tradicional, para presentarse en CENIT junto con los profesores Joel y la voluntaria Kristina .

Actualmente hay dos Educadores de Calle y cinco voluntarias. A todos les gusta trabajar con los niños.

San Roque in the afternoon / San Roque en las tardes

Every afternoon there are a lot of children who have to do their homework. The children are from six to twelve years old. It starts at two o' clock and we help the children till four o' clock. We bring food from CENIT, most of the time fruit. At 4 o' clock we give them the food, before they leave.

If they don't have homework, they can play games. Or they can go outside to play, for example to play football. It is really nice to work with the children at San Roque, because they have a lot of enthusiasm.

Besides doing homework, we do a lot of other things with the children, for example, with the celebrations of the foundation of Quito. The children of San Roque prepared a traditional dance. During the Fiestas of Quito at CENIT, they performed their dance. They were wearing traditional clothes.

In San Roque are working two social workers and five volunteers at the moment. All of them like to work with the children.
