Dear Friends of CENIT, Queridos Amigos de CENIT,

Hello and welcome to the summer edition of our quarterly updates. As the school year comes to a close we have been winding down our classroom projects and focusing on the year-round projects as well as gearing up for our summer camp program!

The school year ended successfully and was celebrated in a lovely graduation ceremony for the high school students. The volunteers from the market programs escorted their children to the ceremony so that they would have the opportunity to see students who have stayed and completed their schooling. While of course we were excited to have a ceremony for the older kids, we couldn't forget our class of kindergarten kids who, too, have achieved much this academic year. We are very proud to see that they completed the year with new important skills, which we celebrated with certificates, music, and of course, cake. The graduations continued this summer with the young ladies from year 10 receiving their dress-making qualifications and the boys their carpentry qualifications. These marketable skills we hope they will put to use now that they are out of school. And of course we don't want to forget to mention the women of the beauty-, art- and jewelery-making courses who displayed their paintings and pieces of jewelery they created throughout the year and were given certificates to commemorate their hard work.

The end of the school year also was a time of good-byes. We said farewell to the Director of CENIT, Sister Jaqueline Calle Cabrera, who left to join another foundation in the south. While we are very sad to lose Sister Jaqueline after all she has done, we are looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish with Sister Blanca Rosa, the new Director! A few words from Sister Blanca Rosa…

Dear Friends,

I am Sister Blanca Rosa Chuquimarca, the new Director of CENIT. It is a great pleasure for me to work with the people who need it most, like the children, young people and their families who live in the South of the city of Quito. Our goal is to welcome the working girls and boys and young people in order to offer them an education. I thank you for your kindness and the love that you show for helping the most vulnerable children.

In the new school year, my role as Director is to work on the coordination of CENIT in order to keep things running well. I hope that you will continue to support us in this social work that we carry out.

I would like to reiterate my thanks and wish that the Lord of Love and of Life will strengthen our personal, family and professional life.

We also said goodbye to Sara Schodt, a long-term volunteer who was in charge of the Adopt-a-Dream program here at CENIT and accomplished much in her year and a half. Thank you Sara!

CENIT is continuing to grow and flourish with the help of our wonderful volunteers and staff who continue to work incredibly hard and share their energy with the children of CENIT and South Quito. Hola y Bienvenidos a la edición de verano de nuestra revista trimestral. Mientras que el año escolar termina, hemos estado concluyendo las clases y concentrándonos en los proyectos que tenemos todo el año, y a su vez preparándonos para el campamento de verano.

Este año escolar terminó exitosamente y lo celebramos con una ceremonia linda para todos los estudiantes del colegio. Los voluntarios de los programas en los mercados trajeron a sus niños a la ceremonia de de terminación del año lectivo en CENIT para tener la oportunidad de ver a los estudiantes que orgullosamente pasan al curso siguiente. Claro que estuvimos entusiasmados de tener una ceremonia para los chicos del colegio, pero no podemos olvidar nuestra clase de kinder, quien ha logrado mucho este año escolar también. Estamos orgullosos de culminar con el año lectivo, todo terminó en una ceremonía en la que a los niños/as que demostraron sus capacidades les dieron certificados, donde hubo un poco de música y claro que pastel. Las graduaciones continuaron este verano con las mujeres jóvenes recibiendo los certificados realizando una demostración de sus prendas confeccionadas y los hombres jóvenes recibiendo los certificados de carpintería. Esperamos que usen estas capacidades para mejorar la situación familiar, ahora que han terminado sus estudios. Y claro que no queremos olvidar mencionar a las mujeres de los cursos de belleza, arte y joyas quienes exhibieron sus obras y piezas de joya que crearon durante el año y a ellas se les entrego también certificados, para motivarlas que continúen realizando cosas importantes en su vida.

El fin del año escolar también era un tiempo de decir adiós. Dijimos "Chao" a Sara Schodt, una voluntaria de largo tiempo quien colaboro en el programa "Adopt-a-Dream" aquí en CENIT y logró mucho en su año y medio. Gracias Sara!

A fines de junio salió la anterior Directora Hna. Jaqueline Calle, quien cumplió con su periodo de trabajo en CENIT. Ella esta muy agradecida de las organizaciones y personas que ayudan a CENIT. La Hna. Jaqueline se marcha a otra institución para dirigirla.

Ya entregó la dirección a la Hna. Blanca Rosa Chuquimarca. ¡Mientras que estamos un poco tristes de la partida de la Hermana Jaqueline después de todo lo que hizo por el bienestar de los niños/as adolescentes y sus familias, tenemos muchas expectativas de lo que podamos lograr con la Hermana Blanca Rosa, la nueva directora! soy Hna. Blanca Rosa Chuquimarca, la nueva directora de CENIT. Para mi es un placer y alegría inmensa de trabajar con las personas que más lo necesitan como son los niños/as adolescentes y sus familias ubicadas en la zona sur de la ciudad de Quito. Nuestra finalidad es acoger a las niñas, niños, adolescentes trabajadores para brindarles formación integral. Le agradezco del gran corazón y sensibilidad que tienen por ayudar a la niños/as más vulnerables

En este nuevo año lectivo mi compromiso como Directora es trabajar en coordinación circular para el buen funcionamiento de Cenit, espero que ustedes continúen apoyándonos en esta obra de carácter social

News from the Markets / Noticias de los Mercados

Caballos

Although the Caballos market has seen quite a few developments in recent months, much remains the same. Volunteers Tricia, Julia and Julius have left and the new team consists of Lori, Anna, Kathy, Kelly and Kristin. In addition, a group of about thirteen or fifteen children has mushroomed to twenty-five to thirty for the summer months. Despite the growth and change in faces, the same creative energy and spirit of unity remains in Caballos, with activities focused on both group interaction and individual skill development. We've had the opportunity to assist parents in the market through the enrolment process both at CENIT and other schools for the upcoming fall. We are very fortunate to have various sets of siblings who help to create an atmosphere of patience, responsibility and good humour in the group and particularly between the older and younger children whose ages range from two to twelve.

Aunque en el Mercado de Caballos ha habido mucho desarrollo en los últimos meses, hay cosas que deben cambiar todavía. Los voluntarios Patricia, Julia y Julius se han ido y el nuevo grupo consiste actualmente de Lori, Anna, Kathy, Nelly and Kristin. Además, un grupo de cómo trece o quince niños se ha multiplicado a veinte-cinco a treinta, debido a las vacaciones de verano. Aunque el grupo de niños es mas grande, la misma energía creativa y espíritu de unidad permanece en Caballos, con actividades centradas en la interacción del grupo y el desarrollos de las capacidades individu8ales. Hemos ayudado a los padres del mercado en el proceso de inscripción tanto en CENIT como en las otras escuelas para el próximo año lectivo. Somos muy afortunados en tener varios hermanos y hermanas entre los niños que ayudan a crear una atmósfera de paciencia, responsabilidad y buen humor en el grupo, especialmente entre los niños de diferentes edades — tenemos niños desde dos a doce años.

Mayorista

Every week at Mayorista market we choose a different theme to base our week's activities on. In recent weeks we have chosen animals of the sea and colours. This week we have chosen the jungle and will be doing different projects involving animals from the jungle. We are making a poster of a jungle and every day we are going to add new animals to it, starting with a monkey and finishing with a lion. Therefore this week's activities include the permanent activities like singing of songs and brushing of teeth, animal action games, colouring in animals and creating different animals out of play-do. Furthermore we are hoping to buy yarn for the children to use to create the mane of a lion.

All these activities should help to develop the child's creative and manipulation skills as well as to enhance their daily enjoyment of our morning sessions. Most importantly we are working to improve their general social interaction.

Cada semana en el mercado Mayorista escogemos un tema diferente en el cual nos basamos para hacer las actividades. En las últimas semanas hemos escogido animales del mar y los colores. Esta semana hemos escogido la selva y sus diferentes animales. Vamos a hacer un cartel de una selva y cada día vamos a añadir nuevos animales, empezando con un mono y terminando con un león. Por lo tanto las actividades de esta semana incluyen los normales como canciones y el lavado de sus dientes, y además juegos de acciones de animales, colorear los animales y realizar diferentes animales con plastilina. Además esperamos comprar hilo para hacer la melena del león con los niños.

Todas esas actividades deben ayudar a desarrollar las habilidades creativas y de manipulación de los niños; además de aumentar su diversión diaria con nuestras sesiones de la mañana. Asimismo y lo más importante esperamos mejorar su interacción general social.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is going really well at the moment; we've just had an influx of new children as it is the school holidays. This means a lot of the children that are coming are slightly older than our usual crew so we're tailoring our activities to suit all age groups. It had been suggested that we split the groups up however by keeping the large group (up to and around 40) together the children are learning how to cooperate and participate in a team where everyone moves at different paces and therefore helps one another. The children are very eager to learn and participate in our activities, however some times a little too eager! So we are teaching them how to wait patiently and say please and thank you as a matter of course, something which often is not enforced at home.

We are trying to maintain a flexible but consistent structure with the children so they know what to expect from us and vice versa. Furthermore it is important that their parents have a good idea of what their children are doing with us. As more children come, we are making an effort to initiate new relationships with the parents that might often show little interest in us and in the progress their child is making. This is a good way to spread our enthusiasm to the families and show their great achievements, on a more negative note, if the children are having problems keeping good communication with the family is fundamental.

Every Monday we are going to the library at CENIT where the children can play peacefully and read. This is a time when the children are introduced to a more disciplined situation than most are accustomed to, thus gently preparing for what lies ahead when they reach school age. At first many of the new children were very timid, however within only a couple of weeks they are outgoing and making lots of new friendships. Parents are coming daily to ask whether their children can be enrolled and the great thing about this program is that any child can come and no one gets refused! I'm glad that the program can provide some structure to otherwise chaotic lives, especially during the long holidays when children are left to roam free.

Actualmente tenemos más o menos cuarenta niños/-as a causa de las vacaciones, tenemos niños/-as mas grandes y la mayoría del tiempo ayudan a los mas pequeños. Los niños son muy agradables y quieren aprender y jugar con nosotros. Nuestro grupo esta enseñando buenos modales para decir gracias y por favor. Además estamos enseñando a tener paciencia, lo cual no aprenden en su casa. Mantenemos una estructura cotidiana, por eso los niños/-as saben lo que tienen que hacer y como comportarse.

Tratamos de mantener una buena relación con los padres, esta es una buena manera de incluir a los padres que no se interesan en lo que sus niños hacen porque podemos compartir los momentos especiales de sus vidas. Cuando conocemos los problemas de los niños/-as podemos hablar con sus padres y tratar de resolver cualquier situación.

Todos los lunes vamos a la biblioteca de CENIT donde los niños/-as juegan y leen cuentos. Este es un tiempo donde los niños/-as pueden distraerse y compartir en grupo. Lo mas importante para los niños/-as pequeños es una forma de cómo introducirlos en su futura vida escolar. Al principio los niños/-as nuevos estaban tímidos pero con nuestras actividades son más felices y activos, lo cual les permite hacer buenos amigos con los otros niños/-as que van al proyecto. Por esta causa vienen nuevos padres a preguntar si pueden inscribir a sus niños en el proyecto.

Cisnes

Last week we had one difficult day and one great day. On Wednesday we went to the park near the market. However, we had a difficult time with the kids, because we didn't plan enough and due to the lack of discipline. Many kids, like Axil, Christopher and Jasmine wanted to play in the park and they were distracted from our activities. We did not achieve our goals of the day and every volunteer felt bad at the end of the day. But, the following day we went to our spot inside the market. We had a better plan and began with a game of introductions that includes a lot of yelling. New children came because they could hear the noise of the game and three mothers asked us about our program with the kids and CENIT. The kids liked all of the coloring activities and the puzzles with numbers. All of the kids, including Axil and Christopher paid attention and had enthusiasm for the activities. We played several games with a lot of running and as always ended by washing our hands and brushing teeth. After last week, we feel better because we have learned the importance of our own preparation and organization with the kids.

La semana pasada tuvimos un día difícil y un gran día. El miércoles fuimos al parque cerca del mercado Cisnes para el programa. Sin embargo, nuestro tiempo con los niños fue duro por la falta de nuestra planificación y la falta de disciplina de los niños. Algunos niños como Axil, Christopher y Jasmine quisieron jugar en el parque y fueron distraídos. No realizamos nuestras metas del día y cada voluntario se sentía mal al fin. Pero, el siguiente día fuimos a nuestro lugar dentro del mercado. Tuvimos un mejor plan y empezamos con un juego de presentación que incluye gritar mucho. Los nuevos niños vinieron porque ellos oyeron el ruido del juego, también tres madres nos preguntaron sobre nuestro programa en CENIT. A los niños les gustó mucho las actividades de pintar e incluir los números. Todos los niños, incluyendo Axil y Christopher, estuvieron muy inteligentes con mucha energía para realizar las actividades. Jugamos varios juegos como correr mucho y como siempre terminamos con lavar y cepillar los dientes. Después de la semana pasada nos sentimos mejor porque hemos aprendido la importancia de nuestra planificación y organización con los niños.

Play Therapy / Tutoría de Juegos

We have 5 children enrolled in play therapy: Alex, Jasmine, Nicole x 2, Angie. These children really benefit from one on one attention and with three volunteers to 5 children this programme is ideal. All the children come from around neighboring markets where their mothers work. For the most past their mothers have little time to look after them and the children are left to run wild around the various markets all day.

Play Therapy has its own allocated room within CENIT and thanks to the help of many previous volunteers we now have a lot of resources to draw from when doing craft activities and playing, including: puzzles, play-dough, dressing-up clothes, music and much more. We are initiating a new routine which will provide the children with a simple structure which they can understand; this enables them to understand when they have free time to play and when they need to pay attention. At the moment a popular activity with the children is dressing as princesses or Robin Hood and dancing to Robbie Williams!

The children appreciate the time they spend with us and already it can be seen that their behaviour has improved with time and special care. Often we try and build up a relationship with the parents so we can freely discuss any problems and encourage them to believe in the children in order to build a vision for their future.

En tutoría de juegos tenemos cinco niños inscritos, que necesitan mucha atención y con tres voluntarios, podemos darles la atención de vida que necesitan. Todos los niños/-as vienen de los alrededores y sus madres trabajan todo el día en el mercado. Por eso no tienen tiempo para cuidarles, muchas veces las madres no se dan cuneta de lo que hacen sus hijos.

Estos niños/-as tienen su propio cuarto de juegos dentro de CENIT. Gracias a que los voluntarios compran los juegos para los niños/-as, tenemos muchas cosas divertidas para ellos. En este cuarto hay diferentes disfraces, rompecabezas, plastilina, música — canciones infantiles y muchas cosas mas. Tenemos una rutina para los niños/-as que es más o menos una estructura, para que sepan cuando pueden jugar libremente y cuando necesitaban poner atención. El tiempo más divertido para los niños/-as es cuando se ponen sus disfraces y bailamos todos juntos.

Los niños/-as aprecian el tiempo que les dan los voluntarios y se puede notar que los niños/-as han mejorado su compartimiento y habilidades. Cuando se comportan mal es debido a que no reciben atención por parte de sus padres. Después de la clase hablamos con los padres sobre su comportamiento. En varias ocasiones los padres pensaban que sus niños son brutos porque tienen problemas pero no es así. Tratamos de convencerles que sus hijos pueden mejorar su compartimiento y habilidades con una atención especial.

Learning English at CENIT / Aprender Inglés en CENIT

English Classes / Clases de Inglés

English classes have had an eventful and hopefully useful 3 months. The 1st level has been concentrating on vocabulary - sports, colours, food, parts of the body and 'I like'. 2nd Level has been working on more advanced vocabulary including animals, foods, family and also working on the verb 'to be' as well as basic adjectives and descriptions. Vocabulary books were also introduced to 2nd Level around 2 months ago with some success. The 3rd Level has progressed particularly well with the verb 'to be' and adjectives and have also been learning question phrases - 'who, what, why, when, where, how'.

All levels did well in their end of year exams and celebrated with English parties! Thanks to all the volunteers Susie, Harry, Tim, Fliss, Leoni and Caroline for their work in English classes this term.

En las Clases de Inglés, hemos pasado unos tres meses muy interesantes y espero que haya sido útil para los alumnos. El primer nivel se ha concentrado en vocabulario - los deportes, los colores, la comida, el cuerpo y la frase, 'me gusta'. En el segundo nivel han trabajado en vocabulario más avanzado, incluiyendo los animales, la comida, la familia y el verbo 'to be' ('estar/ser') y también adjetivos. Hace dos meses empezamos a usar cuadernos sólo para el vocabulario lo que ayuda a los alumnos recordar el vocabulario que han aprendido. En el tercer nivel han avanzado muy bien con el verbo 'to be' ('estar/ser'), los adjetivos y también han aprendido palabras para hacer preguntas 'who, what, why, when, where, how' (quién, qué, porqué, cuándo, donde, cómo).

A todos los niveles les salió bien el examen final y festejamos con una fiestas (¡de estilo Inglés!) Gracias a todos los voluntarios - Susie, Harry, Tim, Fliss, Leoni y Caroline por su buen trabajo en las Clases de Ingles este trimestre.

Summer English Course / Clases de Inglés (Programa de Verano)

This summer, we are pleased to be able to offer a new programme; English classes for children aged between 4 and 18. The program will run throughout July, Mondays to Wednesdays. Classes will take place between 10 and 12am, and the children have already shown a lot of interest in the program.

The aim is that the children will have a basic knowledge of English by the end of the month, by studying vocabulary and grammar on a variety of topics such as the weather, home and family, daily routine, sports and free time. However, we will start by learning the numbers and basic phrases to greet and introduce. I hope that the classes will be conducted in a fun yet informative way. When the program ends, hopefully each child will be able to express themselves and understand a basic level of the language.

En este verano estamos felices que podemos ofrecer un programa nuevo: clases de ingles para los niños entre los 4 y 18 años de edad. El programa durará todo el mes de julio, de lunes a miércoles. Las clases serán entre las 10 y las 12 de la mañana. Se ha mostrado gran interés en este programa por parte de los niños.

El objetivo es que al fin del mes los niños tengan un conocimiento básico del ingles, donde deben estudiar vocabulario y gramática en una variedad de asuntos, por ejemplo el tiempo, la familia, la casa, la rutina diaria, los deportes y el tiempo libre. Sin embargo, empezaremos con los números y frases básicas, además de saludar e introducirse. Espero que las clases se conduzcan de un modo divertido pero informativo. Cuando termine el programa, ojalá cada niño pudiera expresarse y tener un nivel básico del idioma.

Adopt-a-Dream / Invierta en una vida

At the moment we are supporting 28 kids from 25 families. Every single kid gets a monthly grant between $20 and $50 which we use to pay for everything that is needed for school like matriculation or uniforms. Apart from the money we donate, we go shopping once a month with the whole family and every third month we go to buy clothes for the children.

Besides this material support, we also spend time with the families and give moral support. That means that we are visiting the families regularly at their home to see how they live, how their family and school situation is and what we can do to help. In other words we are the contact people for any concern the family may have. We motivate the kids to go to school, motivate the family to change their lifestyle for the better and we mediate in conflicts and help to organize various aspects of their lives.

And some news we are glad to announce is that we will be accepting more kids in our program!

Actualmente tenemos 28 niños de 25 familias en el programa. Cada uno de los niños recibe una beca entre $20 y $50 mensuales de la cual pagamos todo para la escuela como las matrículas, uniformes, comida y salud. Aparte de esto una vez al mes vamos de compras con las familias y cada tres meses también compramos ropa para el niño.

Además del apoyo con cosas materiales las familias gozan de un cuidado especial, es decir que visitamos a las familias regularmente para ver como viven y como está la situación familiar y escolar para ver en que podemos ayudar. En otras palabras somos personas de contacto para cualquier inquietud de la familia. Trabajamos como motivador en cuanto a la asistencia de los niños a las escuelas para que cambien su estilo de vida, como mediador en conflictos y organizador de varias cosas.

Tenemos buenas noticias, vamos a aceptar mas niños en el programa!

Helping with Healthcare / Ayuda con la Salud

Street Clinic / Clínica de la Calle

The past month in the Street Clinic has been different from the usual routine. Instead of visiting patients in different markets each day of the week, we focused just on the market San Roque, near Old Town Quito. Our task was to do a thorough report on all the children and families in San Roque who are supported by CENIT. We measured the height and weight of all the children, gave them anti-parasite medication, and talked with their parents who work selling produce in the market. With the parents we discussed the free services provided by the CENIT clinic, and encouraged them to come to the center for medical attention. Also during this time the paediatrician father of a volunteer was in town and wanted to help with medical care. He came to San Roque for an entire day and checked all the children who attend CENIT programs there. He noted that the main health problems of the children are caused by malnutrition and poor personal hygiene, for which he could do nothing specific. He recommended that all the children receive a blood test, and that they visit a dentist.

Another notable recent event was the arrival of a group of American medical students, here on a program to learn medical Spanish. They came to the Camal market for a morning and attended over one hundred and thirty children. It was a valuable exchange for both the children, who received some needed medical attention, and also for the students, who learned a little bit about the culture here, and about the struggles of many people who live and work in the markets.

El mes pasado, hemos hecho algo un poco diferente en la Clínica de la Calle. En vez de ir a un mercado distinto cada día, nos concentramos solo en el mercado San Roque, situado arriba de la plaza San Francisco, cerca del Centro Histórico. Por unas semanas hicimos un informe de todos los niños y familias ayudados por CENIT. La tarea fue tomar el peso y talla de todos los niños, desparasitarlos, y hablar con todos sus padres. A los padres les comunicamos que en la clínica de CENIT ofrecemos servicios médicos gratuitos. Les preguntamos de sus problemas de salud y les avisamos que vengan a CENIT para realizar un tratamiento cuando el caso lo amerita. También vino el padre de una voluntaria, quien es Pediatra, y el checó a todos los niños que participan en los programas de CENIT en San Roque. El notó que los problemas de los niños son causados por la mala nutrición e higiene dental y personal, y no pudo hacer algo específica para ellos. El Doctor les recomendó que hagan un examen de sangre, y que acudan a un dentista.

Otra cosa notable que pasó recién fue la visita de un grupo de estudiantes de medicina estadounidense. Están haciendo un programa aquí en Ecuador para aprender español médico. Vinieron una mañana al mercado Camal y checaron a muchos niños, más que 130. Fue un buen intercambio: los niños recibieron una buena atención y los estudiantes aprendieron algo de la cultura aquí y la desesperación de la gente por ser atendidos por los médicos. Gracias a todos los médicos que ayudaron en el mercado camal.

The Clinic / La Clínica

The clinic has been hard at work these past few months working on improving efficiency and trying to see as many patients as possible each day.

We have a new Head Nurse, Nancy Lara, who has been helping both in the Street Clinic as well as the Clinic Center. Our current staff includes Nancy, Gabe the long-time director, Carolina from California and Cora from California — and of course the doctor who continues to come every Monday and Wednesday and gynaecologist who comes every other Tuesday.

For the most part, the clinic has a relatively calm environment, but every so often we receive a dramatic patient, like this past month with a young man from the high school who nearly chopped his thumb off in carpentry (he wasn't paying enough attention!).

The clinic was fortunate to recently have a visit from a doctor from the United States, a father of one of our volunteers. He and his wife generously donated both their time as well as tons of medication that will be put to excellent use as medical supplies can run up a large bill. Thanks again, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman!!

School is out for summer, so the clinic is not being visited by the students faking stomach aches and other maladies to get out of class — but we continue to serve the incredibly hard-working community of South Quito who often do not have an alternative way of seeking medical attention. We are committed to purchasing medications for those who can't afford to do so, and paying half the cost of any examination they may need to have done to encourage responsibility for one's health. All in all, the clinic has been making small daily adjustments to become a more productive community resource.

La clínica ha estado trabajando duro en estos meses. También cada vez mejora la atención para toda la gente que la necesita.

Tenemos una nueva enfermera principal, Nancy Lara, quien ha estado ayudando a ambos lugares — la clínica de CENIT y la clínica de la calle.

El personal actual esta conformado por: Nancy, Gabriel el director de largo-tiempo, Carolina de California y Cora de California — y claro también el doctor que colabora desde largo tiempo con CENIT, la atención se realiza cada lunes y miércoles, también colabora la ginecología que viene dos Martes cada mes.

El ambiente de la clínica por lo general ha estado un poco calmado pero a veces recibimos un paciente dramático — como el mes pasado un hombre joven del colegio quien casi perdió su pulgar en su clase de carpintería.

La clínica es muy afortunada porque contamos con la visita de un doctor de los Estados Unidos, el padre de una voluntaria. El y su esposa dieron generosamente su tiempo y provisiones médicos que usaremos mucho porque estas provisiones cuestan mucho. ¡Gracias, otra vez, Sr. y Sra. Coleman!

El año escolar ha terminado y ahora no estamos recibiendo a los estudiantes, que siempre están fingiendo estar enfermos solo porque quieren salir de las clases, pero sin embargo seguimos colaborando con la comunidad del sur de Quito que trabajan muy duro y no tienen la oportunidad de recibir otra atención medica.

En total, la clínica ha estado haciendo modificaciones pequeños a ser un recurso de la comunidad más productivo.

Dentist Programme / Programa del Dentista

This school year we have finished the treatment for all of the kids from the kindergarten, the Nivelaciones program (preparation for entering school for those who have been out of school or never before attended school), first level and the majority of the second level. In all there were more or less 120 kids. We know that there a lot more in CENIT and for that reason we want to improve the possibilities of accessing dental treatment. That's why we are looking for volunteers who just have finished their studies in dental medicine via the web page. We are also asking volunteers who are leaving if they know anyone who could help. Of course, if you are reading this and are able to help, we'd be really glad to have you! This week we have a new director in CENIT and we will propose this idea to her and try to get money to have a space within CENIT just for dental treatment. This might help to increase awareness in the importance of good dental hygiene and healthy teeth. We want to help some of the kids with braces to arrange their teeth but some of the parents don't collaborate how we want them to (they have to pay half the price while CENIT pays the other half and the parents can arrange to pay their half in any way that they are able to). The school finished but we have one boy (Franklin from Caballos market) who now has straight teeth and seems to be really proud of them. Moreover our daily work is a bit difficult because the majority of the market kids is really young and is afraid of the dentist and the doctor doesn't have that much time either at the moment, because at this time of year, many kids need certifications to enter school and the Doctor is busy with this, but we look forward to continuing this work next school year.

En este año escolar hemos acabado el tratamiento con todos los niños del jardín, los de las nivelaciones y del primer nivel y la mayoría del segundo nivel. (A lo menos con los que se dejaron tratar.) En total fueron más o menos 120 niños. Sabemos que hay muchos niños más en CENIT y por eso queremos mejorar las posibilidades de tratamiento dental. Por eso buscamos voluntarios que han acabado sus estudios en odontología por la página web. También preguntamos a los que se marchan si conocen alguien que pueda ayudar. Por supuesto sería muy bueno tener la ayuda de ustedes. Esta semana tenemos una nueva directora en CENIT y vamos a hablar con ella para proponer la idea y solicitar fondos para instalar un consultorio dentro de CENIT. Eso también ayudaría mucho concientizando a los niños sobre la importancia de sus dientes y de realizar una buena higiene dental. Queremos ayudar a algunos niños que necesitan aparatos para arreglar su dentadura pero los padres no colaboran como querríamos (tienen que dar el 50% aunque pueden pagar cuando quieren) y también se acabó el año escolar pero tenemos un chico (Franklin de Caballos) que ahora tiene sus dientes en muy buen estado y el parece muy orgulloso de su boca ahora. Además es un poco difícil nuestro trabajo normal porque la mayoría de los niños de los mercados son chiquitos y muchos tienen bastante miedo y la doctora tampoco tiene mucho tiempo para nosotros, porque muchos niños necesitan certificados para entrar a las escuelas o los colegios, pero vamos a ver como será en el nuevo año escolar.

CENIT's Kindergarten / El Jardín de CENIT

The 28 children of the Kindergarten finished school on Monday 25th June. The last week was a special week, we watched a lot of movies, went on a trip and during one Saturday we painted the classroom with the help of the parents. It was an opportunity to get to know the parents better.

The children prepared a presentation with the teacher (Maria Fernanda), Hendrik and I (the volunteers) to show their parents all the things they have learnt during this year, for example: vowels, adding and subtracting.

The parents were very proud and happy when their children got their CENIT diplomas for completing the year in the Kindergarten.

After the official part, everybody went to the classroom to have an aperitif which was prepared carefully by the parents.

The end of the year was very emotional and the teacher, Hendrik and I felt sad when we said goodbye to the children, but we wished them the best for the next year in a new school.

Los 28 niños del Jardín acabaron la escuela el lunes 25 de Junio. La última semana fue especial, vimos muchas películas, fuimos a pasear, también durante un sábado pintamos el aula con los padres. Fue una oportunidad de conocer un poco más a estas personas.

Los niños prepararon con la profesora Maria Fernanda, Hendrik y Odile (los voluntarios) una presentación para demostrar a sus padres todo lo que han aprendido durante este año lectivo, las vocales, las sumas y restas, los medios de transporte y de comunicación…

Los padres fueron muy orgullosos y felices cuando su niño recibió el diploma de terminación del Jardín infantil en CENIT.

Después de esta parte formal, todos fuimos al aula para disfrutar de un aperitivo preparado con mucho cuidado por los padres.

Este fin de año fue muy rico en emoción, la profesora, Hendrik y Odile se despidieron de los niños con un poco de tristeza pero les deseamos lo mejor para el año próximo en una escuela nueva.

Workshops and sales / Talleres y Ventas

Art Class / La Clase de Arte

The Painting Workshop is actually an art class that meets once a week for two hours. The women who attend do their paintings at home and come each Thursday afternoon to practice their artistic techniques and learn methods that can help them in their principal activity of painting. There are six women in the group and each week they bring their most recent paintings to be sold by the volunteers in charge of the class. Numbers and names are put on the backs of the paintings and they are hung on the wall in the volunteer room. After dealing with these logistical matters we start work.

Each week we plan a different project for the women. They do all their painting at home and the class intends to help them learn other art techniques that can help them hone their skills. One week we drew fruits and a pitcher with charcoal, focusing on the proportions of the objects and their relation to one another. The women learned to look at the scene in a general way first, at how each element was placed, and then later to concentrate on the details. Another class we made collages from images and words found in magazines and newspapers, on the theme of our goals and dreams. One other time with oil pastels we drew a bottle with flowers, concentrating especially on the light and shadow of the objects. A key ingredient in the class is the music we always listen to, brought by the women for all of our enjoyment.

En el taller de pintura tenemos una clase de arte cada semana por 2 horas. Vienen seis mujeres cada jueves para practicar sus talentos artísticos. Traen sus nuevos cuadros que han hecho durante la semana, y al inicio de la clase los entregan a nosotras las profesoras para venderlos. Se escriben los números y nombres en la parte detrás de los cuadros, y se cuelgan en la pared de la oficina de los voluntarios de CENIT. Después de arreglar estas cositas, empezamos la clase de arte.

Cada semana preparamos una actividad diferente para las mujeres. Ellas hacen sus obras de pintura en la casa, y con esta clase intentamos enseñarles otras formas de arte que pueden ayudarles en su trabajo principal que son los cuadros. Una semana dibujamos frutas y una jarra con carboncillos, enfocando en las proporciones de los objetos. Ellas aprendieron sobre la relación de las cosas, desde otra óptica y pensar en lo general antes de los detalles. Otra clase hicimos los colages de imágenes y palabras de revistas y periódicos, con el tema de nuestras metas y sueños. Y otro tiempo usamos crayones de óleo y dibujamos una botella con flores, dándose cuenta especialmente en la luz y las sombras. Siempre escuchamos música que traen las mujeres — esto es una buena adición a la clase.

Jewelry / Bisutería

Three women participated in the Jewellery making course this school year. They learned to make various models, like for example bracelets, necklaces, etc. Also, on the 5th of July, two of the women graduated form this course and received their certificate as well as organized a display of their work.

En el proyecto de bisutería, en este año lectivo participaron 3 mujeres, quienes aprendieron a realizar varios modelos como: pulseras, collares, etc. También el 5 de julio se graduaron 2 de las mujeres quienes recibieron su diploma, además realizaron una exposición de los trabajos.

Leather Class / Clase de Cuero

By the end of the year the leather course was completing its pending orders from Germany. Even though the leather course was in a little bit of a rush to complete the orders and the girls had to work nearly up to the last day, their commitment to the program didn't lack for one second. All the products have been completed and are currently being shipped to the customers.

With the end of the school year, my work at CENIT also ends and I just want to say that it was a great time and I am very pleased to have been able to work with such committed girls and such committed co-workers in the leather program. On my last full day in Quito the girls attending the leather course set up a good bye party and I must truly say that I am sad to leave and not be able to supervise the course next year.

In this regard I just want to thank everybody who spent time helping in this program: selling, buying and advertising the products.

Al fin del año en la clase de cuero se terminaron los productos para Alemania. Las chicas tuvieron que terminar los productos muy rapido y entonces casi tuvieron que trabajar hasta el último dia de las clases para este pedido de alemania. Todos los productos estuvieron terminados y ya fueron enviados a las personas que compraron los productos.

Con el fin del año también termió mi tiempo en CENIT y solamente quiero decir que este tiempo fue un tiempo muy, muy chévere con todas las personas que trabajan en CENIT y con las niñas en mi programa, la clase de cuero. En mi ultimo día las niñas prepararon una despedida para mi. De verdad tengo que decir que estoy triste que me tengo que ir y que no puedo dirigir el curso en el año que viene.

Quiero decir gracias a todas las personas que ayudaron en la clase de cuero.

Production / Producción

Unfortunately there is not a lot to say about the production program. As already mentioned in the article regarding the leather program, a lot of leather products have been sold to different organizations, companies and people in Germany. Furthermore, ViaNiños ordered a lot of material bags and Christmas cards from CENIT. It seems there are even more orders to come for the leather program and more cards have to be shipped to ViaNiños.

De verdad no hay mucho que decir en la producion. Como ustedes pudieron leer en la revista de la clase de cuero muchísimos productos de cuero fueron vendidos en Alemania. La organización de ViaNiños también compró productos de cuero, tarjetas y bolsos de la maquina de coser. En el futuro estamos esperando nuevos pedidos para productos de cuero y coser, y tenemos que enviar otras tarjetas a la organización de ViaNiños.

Help with Homework / Ayuda con las Tareas Diarias

CEA

CEA provides tutoring help for those kids between the ages of 6-16 mainly from the Camal Markets, who attend school in the afternoons. The program runs Monday thru Friday from 9:30am - 12 noon and offers the children tutoring services from volunteers that range anywhere from Sciences and Reading help to Language (i.e. English, Grammar and writing) and mathematics. Brian, a young boy around the age of 6 was beginning to learn his multiplication tables in school but was having some level of difficulty remembering them all. After much practice, games and recitation with a volunteer at CEA everyday, after three weeks, he had all of his tables memorized.

Volunteer responsibilities are to gather the children at 9:30am at CENIT and hand out their morning snack. Afterwards everyone walks together to the CEA tutoring center approximately five minutes down the road. Once there, the volunteers begin to pair up with the children and review their homework given out the afternoon before in their notebooks, at which point they begin tutoring.

CEA's aim is to make available those resources of academic help, which will allow the children the opportunity to advance in their studies.

CEA ofrece apoyo pedagógico a los niños entre 6 y 16. La mayoría de los niños son del mercado Camal. El programa es de lunes a viernes de 9.30 a 12.00, es decir que los niños asisten a la escuela por las tardes. El apoyo que dan los voluntarios puede ser de ciencias naturales, lenguaje (gramática, escribir, inglés), leer y matemáticas. Había por ejemplo un niño, Brian, que recién empezó a aprender la multiplicación y tuvo bastantes problemas con las tablas. Después de practicar con él, jugar e interrogar por unas semanas sé acordó de todas.

Las tareas del voluntario son ir a buscar a todos los niños por la mañana en CENIT y darles la colación. Después van todos juntos a CEA que está a 5 minutos a pie de CENIT donde dividen los voluntarios a los niños para revisar las tareas que dieron los profesores la tarde anterior en la escuela.

La meta de CEA es ofrecer toda la ayuda académica que les permite continuar sus estudios para que no pierdan el año educativo.

San Roque

In San Roque we are normally helping the kids to do their homework but now they have vacations. Two months ago we went to the "Parque Metropolitano" with all of our kids and they really had a great time although it was a challenge to watch all of them! Moreover we were celebrating Children's Day on June 1st in our classroom in San Roque market with a lot of balloons and dancing etc.

Right now we are in a period of planning what we want to do with the children during the vacations, because we want to offer a good program. We want to do painting, hand work, dance and singing, sport, etc. and we'll have to wait and see how it will work out and how many kids will come, but it seems that the parents really like our activities. It seems that the program is going well and we will continue with it next year.

En el mercado San Roque estamos normalmente ayudando a los niños a hacer sus deberes pero ahora los niños tienen vacaciones. Hace dos meses hicimos un paseo al parque metropolitano con todos los niños. Se divirtieron mucho aunque no fue fácil para nosotros cuidar a todos. Además estábamos celebrando el día del niño el primero de junio en nuestro lugar con muchos globos y baile etc.

Ahora estamos planificando lo que vamos a hacer en las vacaciones porque queremos ofrecer un programa a los niños. Queremos hacer algunos talleres como pintura, manualidades, baile, canto, refuerzo escolar, deporte etc. y vamos a ver como será el programa y cuantos niños van a participar pero parece que los padres de familias son muy emocionados. La única cosa que es molestoso es que las hermanas muchas veces vienen atrasadas y tenemos que esperar con 20 niños afuera (los demás también vienen atrasados) por media hora. Pero parece que va bien el programa y seguimos el próximo año.
