Hello Friends of CENIT,

Welcome to another edition of ¡CENIT Ahora! As you will read in the following pages we continue to work in our many programs, which are described below. Lately we have been very busy not only in the projects described below, but also in several other events.

For example, we have welcomed a new nun (Sister Panchita) to replace Sister Emilia who was moved to Guayaquil. On March 8th we celebrated the National Day of the Woman with a very spirited march around the neighbourhood surrounding CENIT. We are also enjoying our new library, which was generously opened by volunteer Anne Aagard, and is full of children every time that it is open. We are also grateful for the books that we continue to receive. Additionally, we'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Bridget Higginson to the CENIT volunteer staff. Bridget will be working with Betty España as a volunteer coordinator. I, Sarah Guerette, will soon be returning to the States to start my post graduate studies. It has been an absolute joy to have shared so much time at CENIT and to have met so many of you. My personal email is sarahguerette@gmail.com, please don't hesitate to be in touch!

Queridos amigos del CENIT,

Estamos aquí otra vez con la revista ¡CENIT Ahora¡ que tiene mucha información sobre cada uno de los proyectos y programas de CENIT. Últimamente hemos estado muy ocupados no solamente con nuestro trabajo diario, sino con unas novedades también.

Por ejemplo, hemos dado la bienvenida a una nueva hermana (Hermana Panchita) que está aquí para reemplazar a Hermana Emilia, que fue traslado a Guayaquil. También celebramos el 8 de marzo el Día Internacional de la Mujer con una marcha por todo el barrio completa con pancartas y bandas. Estamos disfrutando de nuestra nueva biblioteca que fue donada por Anne Aagaard, y que está llena de niños cada vez que está abierta. También estamos muy agradecidos por los libros que seguimos recibiendo. Adicionalmente, nos gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para dar la más cordial bienvenida a Bridget Higginson, que estará trabajando con Betty España como Coordinadora de Voluntarios. Yo, Sarah Guerette, pronto estaré regresando a los Estados Unidos para estudiar un postgrado. Ha sido un gusto tremendo haber compartido tanto tiempo con CENIT y haber conocido tantos de ustedes. News from the Markets / Noticias de los Mercados

Mayorista

In Mayorista things are going pretty well, we are four volunteers now: Emily and Vicky from England, Claire from Ireland and Lucia from Ecuador. The number of kids in our market varies all the time and we cover the whole area of the market, which has enabled a lot of new kids to come to our sessions.

At the beginning, taking the names of every kid was difficult since they don't like to form a line. We decided to try how it would work if one of us went into the room first before the kids to take each of their names and so far this method has gone really well. There are a few kids that come regularly, many of these kids have behavioural problems and sometimes it is very difficult to follow through all the activities. For example when we are singing "la casita" in the part they pretend to find a bigger house, they would start shouting and also in the part with the tiny house, the very young ones would start crying. What we do now is encourage the kids to shout for a bit before we start singing and after a few classes of doing this, they are doing it so much better. Also the difficult kids are getting better. Sometimes they act as a positive influence on the rest of the class, since in spite of being so young they represent important role models.

En el Mayorista las cosas andan bien, somos cuatro voluntarias: Emily y Vicky de Inglaterra, Claire de Irlanda y Lucia del Ecuador, aunque no tenemos muchos niños siempre, estamos haciendo el recorrido por todo el mercado lo que ha hecho que se incluyan nuevos niños.

Al comienzo tomar los nombres de cada niño, se nos hacía difícil ponerlos en fila, también por cuestion de tiempo, así que probamos que una de las voluntarias vaya primero antes de que puedan pasar a la sala e ir tomando los nombres de cada uno de los que entrataban y eso creo que va muy bien. Hay niños que vienen constantemente, muchos de los que son más constantes son los mas problemáticos y a veces es muy dificil llevar a cabo las actividades. Por ejemplo a la hora de cantar, en la cancion "la casita" se supone que se tienen que pretender que uno encuentra una casa grande, pero grande para ellos es gritar asi que gritan toda esa parte e incluso la parte donde tienen una casa chiquita y los mas pequeños se desesperan y lloran, entonces ahora antes de cantar gritamos un poco. Después de unas tres veces de hacerlo antes de la canción es que han llegado a la conclusión que gritar no es cantar, ahora lo están haciendo mejor. Tambien los niños más problemáticos estan mejorando bastante y a veces funcionan como herramientas de cambio de comportamiento de la clase ya que de cierta forma a pesar de estar entre los mas pequeños ellos representan importantes puntos de atencion y liderazgo.

Caballos

The children at Caballos Market are very living, playful and sometimes disobedient. We just introduced new rules which we put on a poster in the room in the market: Some of the rules include no hitting, no bringing sweets, and no touching the volunteers' bags. We have reviewed the rules every day for a week to try to help the children remember them.

Since most of the children are between the ages of two and six, we do a lot of simple craft activities. Some of the activities that we have done recently include decorating bottles, making masks, making hats out of newspaper and creating Easter baskets from construction paper. The kids especially love to use stickers and glitter glue.

We have also been closely monitoring the children to report any medical, emotional or other problems. Franklin just had a brace put in his mouth to fix his teeth, and one little girl is meeting with a psychologist every Friday. We are trying to figure out what may have happened to her that has caused her to grow more withdrawn. We have also spoken with Sonia's father about starting her in school. He is supposed to bring us her birth certificate after Easter so we know what grade she belongs in.

We have a few newcomers who we encourage to keep coming as well as many regulars. On average, we have about sixteen children each day. They are always eager to do the activities we plan, and they keep us volunteers on our toes!

Los niños en el Mercado Caballos son muy amigables. Les gusta jugar mucho pero a veces no nos obedecen. Por eso, implementamos nuevas reglas para los niños. Pusimos las reglas en un póster que pegamos a la pared de nuestra aula. Algunas reglas incluyen no golpear a nadie, no traer caramelos, solamente los voluntarios pueden tocar las bolsas. Revisamos todos los días las reglas por una semana para que recuerden bien todo lo que está escrito.

Como la mayoría de los niños son entre dos y seis años de edad, hacemos muchas actividades de arte. Algunas de nuestras actividades incluyen decorando botellas, haciendo mascaras, haciendo gorras de papel periódico y creando canastas para la Semana Santa. A los niños les encanta usar stickers y goma con brillos.

Estamos prestando mucha atención a los niños para ver si tienen problemas médicas o psicológicas. Franklin recién recibió un frenos para arreglar sus dientes. Una niña se reúne con el psicólogo cada viernes porque queremos saber porque ella se puso más triste y callada. Además, hemos hablado con el papa de la Sonia para ver si el ha pensado en ponerla en la escuela. El debe traernos la partida de nacimiento después de la Semana Santa para ver en que grado debe estar.

Tenemos algunos niños nuevos y tratamos de convencerles que asisten al mercado con nosotros. También hay muchos niños que vienen regularmente. En un día normal, tenemos unos dieciséis niños. Siempre les interesan nuestras actividades, y los voluntarios siempre tienen que estar listos para cualquier cosa.

Cisnes

I've really enjoyed my time working at the market, however short it was. Since I've started, the one big change is our visits to the library. CENIT has recently opened a new library and we have started taking the kids there every other Wednesday. While getting them from the market to CENIT can be quite a challenge, it's worth it once they get here. The first time we took them, they were so amazed by everything; they actually all sat quietly around a table! Since then they have gotten more used to it and now love rooting around in all the toys. We are also getting new kids, who are becoming regulars, while at the same time some have stopped coming. New regulars include Alex, Ivan, Marcelena, Axel, Johnny, and Elvia. Some of the kids that aren't coming as much are the members of the Morrocho family due to the fact that their stand has been closed for a while.

Estoy encantado del trabajo en el mercado durante mi tiempo acá. Desde el principio de mi tiempo aquí, un cambio muy importante fue las visitas a la biblioteca. Recientemente, CENIT ha abierto une biblioteca nueva y hemos empezado a llevar los niños allá cada dos semanas los miércoles. Es muy difícil llevar a los niños a CENIT pero vale la pena. La primera vez que fuimos, ellos se quedaron sorprendidos y se sentaron en las sillas completamente callados. Ahora ellos están acostumbrados a esto y están jugando con todos los juguetes en la biblioteca. Ya tenemos niños nuevos que son regulares y otros que ya no vuelven. Algunos regulares nuevos son Alex, Ivan, Marcelena, Axel, Johnny, y Elvia. Los niños que ya no están participando son de la familia Morrocho porque el puesto estuvo cerrado por algunos meses.

Santa Maria

In Santa Maria we are trying to help children between the ages of 3 to 6 years. The children are not yet in school, so they are still in the markets, playing and we are trying to prepare them for school, so that they will be better prepared to study when they get there.

We have a timetable which we use with the children every day so that they get used to having a structure to their day. At 9.45 we go to the Park, Santa Maria, and we collect all the children who attend regularly. Afterwards we leave them to play for ten minutes because when they arrive they just want to play for a little while. Then we gather them together and we begin in a circle, where we greet each other and ask the children a few questions about themselves and things like the days of the week. Afterwards we do an active game. We have about 5 or 6 games which we often play and sometimes we learn a new game. One example is 1, 2, 3, sun. When we finish the games we do art activities, for example we color in, decorate masks or hats. We also get the children to stick things like crepe paper to the hats. Sometimes we play lottery games or bingo. Then the children wash their hands, brush their teeth and put some moisturising cream on their hands and faces. After this we read a book and we finish the session in a circle and sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Then we take them back to their homes with the things that they made. We also try to talk to the parents to see if everything is okay at home and whether there is anything that CENIT can help with.

En Santa Maria estamos intentando ayudar a los niños que tienen una edad entre los 3 y 6 años. Los niños aún no van a la escuela, así que se quedan jugando en el mercado, y nosotros estamos intentando prepararlos para el colégio, para que puedan estudiar mejor cuando lleguen allí.

Tenemos como un horario que usamos para los niños todos los días para que se acostumbren a seguir cada día una estructura. A las 9:45 vamos al parque de Santa Maria y recogemos a todos los niños que son regulares. Después les dejamos jugar en el parque por diez minutos a causa de que cuando llegan allí nomás quieren jugar un poquito. Luego les recogemos y empezamos con un círculo, en donde nos saludamos y preguntamos algunas preguntas sobre los niños que están allí y cosas como los días de la semana. Después hacemos algún juego activo. Tenemos como 5 o 6 juegos que jugamos bastante y de vez en cuando aprendemos un nuevo. Un ejemplo es el 1,2,3, sol. Cuando acabamos con los juegos, hacemos actividades del arte. Como pintamos, decoramos mascaras o gorras. También usamos bastante pegamento para que puedan pegar cosas encima de las gorras, como el papel crepe. De vez en cuando también jugamos la lotería o bingo. Luego les lavamos las manos. Cepillan los dientes, y además se cogen un poquito de crema para las caras. Después les leemos un libro y acabamos haciendo un círculo donde cantamos estrellita. Luego les llevamos a casa con sus gorras que hicieron. También intentamos hablar con los padres para ver si es que todo va bien en casa o si hay problemas en los que CENIT pueda ayudar.

Homework Help Sessions / Ayuda con las Tareas

CEA (Mornings / En la manaña)

CEA is the project which helps the children with their homework. Every morning the volunteers and the children go to "CENTRO DE APOYO ESCOLAR A NIÑOS", which is situated next to the market. We are responsible for helping each child with their homework. In the middle of the morning, they are given a "colación" (breakfast) and towards the end of the morning we play football, paint, do puzzles or other fun games to relax.

The volunteers are responsible not only for daily tasks but also to provide the children with the best possible environment to study and to socialize. With this is mind, at the last CEA volunteer meeting it was decided that we would divide tables and assign five to seven children to each volunteer. In this way, each volunteer would be responsible for a small group of children and this would create a calmer, organised environment more conducive to learning.

El proyecto de CEA es el proyecto responsable para ayudar a todos los niños en sus tareas diarias. Todas las mañanas los voluntarios van al "CENTRO DE APOYO ESCOLAR", junto al mercado. Ahí se responsabilizan de ayudar a cada niño en diferentes materias. A media mañana hay una "colación" y para finalizar la mañana, todos jugamos futbol, hacemos pinturas, rompecabezas y otros juegos divertidos para relajar.

El trabajo del voluntario no es sólo hacer su responsabilidad y salir sin más preocupaciones. Es su responsabilidad mirar, organizar e intentar mejorar todo el ambiente para que el niño pueda trabajar con mejores resultados.

Para intentar a mejorar este mismo espacio, en la última reunión los voluntarios de CEA decidieron poner de cinco a siete niños en cada mesa con cada voluntario. Así cada uno de nosotros tenemos que tener más atención a "nuestros" niños y por eso somos responsables, siendo así un ambienté mucho más organizado y calmado para trabajar.

CEA (Afternoons / En la tarde)

We are planning to introduce a new points system to the afternoon CEA session (we have heard that a similar system has functioned well for the morning CEA group).

Currently we have no reliable way of monitoring the attendance, behaviour or progress of the kids. Our new approach involves assigning a group of children to each volunteer (approximately 6 kids per volunteer). The volunteer will be responsible for ensuring their group completes their homework to the best of their ability, and for recording attendance. If homework is done well, points will be awarded accordingly. Every two weeks, those with the highest score will be rewarded with a small prize (eg. a pen, notebook) Similarly, those who have an 8/10 day attendance record will be awarded a prize.

We hope this system will serve to motivate the children with their studies. Not only are they given a material incentive but they will receive a richer and more consistent form of personal attention from their assigned volunteer. This routine contact with one single volunteer will bring a greater sense of trust and respect to the teacher/ pupil relationship – producing better results all-round.

Queremos poner en práctica un nuevo sistema en CEA por la tarde. Actualmente, no tenemos una manera segura para controlar la asistencia y el progreso de los niños.

El nuevo planteamiento incluye la asignación a cada voluntario de un grupo de niños (cerca de 6 niños) que dependerán de los voluntarios. El voluntario será responsable para garantizar que todos hayan terminado sus deberes lo mejor posible, y para apuntar su asistencia. Si las tareas han sido bien hechas, y el niño se ha comportado bien, recibirá puntos, cada dos semanas, con el record que queremos marcas supremas reciben un regalo pequeñito (ejemplo: un esfero, un libreto etc…).

Igualmente, los que tienen 8/10 días de asistencia se les concede un premio. Esperamos que este sistema sirva para motivar a los niños con sus estudios. No sólo están dando un estimulo material, pero además reciben un tipo de atención personal mas fuerte y mas consistente del voluntario. Este contacto rutina con un solo voluntario traerá un sentido mayor de confianza y respeto a la relación profesora-estudiante a través de la familiaridad — producirá mejores resultados para todos.

Updates from San Roque / Noticias de San Roque

San Roque (Mornings / En la manaña)

San Roque has been running for the last 5 months, we receive children from 4 to 13 years who participate in different activities depending on their age. Children of 4 to 6 years do worksheets, sing songs, and learn about primary colours, spatial awareness and others. Children from 7 to 9 years learn about primary and secondary colours and the alphabet. Children of 10 to 13 years are doing numbers, school reinforcement, maths and English. We count on the help of 6 volunteers who work with joy putting all their force and energy into their work for the education of the children. Also the parents, like their children, are motivated and happy with our presence and the help we provide.

San Roque en la mañana funciona como proyecto hace 5 meses, recibimos niños de 4 años hasta 13, se aplican actividades de acuerdo a su edad, de 4 a 6 años reciben motricidad, posesiones, comprensión espacial, colores, cantos. 7 a 9 años, vocales, colores primarios y secundarios, alfabeto y números. 10 a 13 años, refuerzo escolar en las siguientes materias como matemáticas, lenguaje, ingles. Contamos con la ayuda de 6 voluntarios quienes trabajan con alegría y sacrificio para la formación de los niños, tanto los padres como sus hijos están motivados y felices por nuestra presencia y ayuda prestada.

San Roque (Afternoons / En la tarde)

San Roque is a market close to the historical center where we help the kids with doing their homework. It is a new project that started November 2006. At the beginning the kids needed some time to get used to us but now they seem to enjoy it a lot and they never want to leave when we finish the classes. The majority of the kids are indigenous and many of them really work hard for school. The problem is that they are not used to thinking for them themselves (it also seems that some of them really lack self-confidence) and many only do homework when a volunteer is next to them. We are now working together with 4 nuns and between 5 and 7 volunteers and we assist 30-50 kids. We are now getting better organized, for example we are planning to visit the schools and the families of some kids. Sometimes a psychologist will come as well to help because some of them really need it. I like the work in San Roque a lot because you can see that our work sometimes has a positive effect and it never gets boring.

San Roque es un mercado cerca del centro histórico en que ayudamos a los niños con sus deberes. Es un nuevo proyecto que empezó en noviembre de 2006. Al inicio los niños necesitaban un poco de tiempo para acostumbrarse a nosotros. Pero ahora parece que les gusta bastante y nunca quieren irse. La mayoría de los niños tienen orígen indígena y muchos de ellos hacen bastantes esfuerzos para la escuela. El problema sólo es que no están acostumbrados a pensar sus mismos o tener ideas própias (también parece que falta autoestima a algunos) y muchos solo hacen los deberes cuando un voluntario está con ellos. Ahora trabajamos con 4 hermanas y con 5-7 voluntarios y tenemos 30-50 niños. Empezamos a organizarnos mejor, por ejemplo queremos hacer visitas a las escuelas y también a los padres de algunos niños. También un psicólogo va a venir a veces para ayudar a los niños porque hay algunos que verdaderamente necesitan ayuda. A mí me gusta bastante trabajar en San Roque porque se ve que les ayuda nuestro trabajo y también nunca es aburrido trabajar con ellos.

CENIT's Kindergarten / El Jardin de CENIT

While the differences between the children are still very obvious, we are seeing a lot of progress. Nearly half of the students have at least one subject in which they really show enthusiasm. At this point are only few students who have already problems in basic things like counting. Improvements are as well visible by having a look at childrens' attitude with one another. There are some children who seem to be more controlling, whereas others seem to be more passive. But there is definitely visible progress. Some students who seemed to be more passive at the beginning of the school year now show more self-confidence.

Additionally, the teacher Maria Fernanda is on maternity leave, and will be replaced by another teacher from CENIT. He will work from 9:00 to 12:00 in the morning, and the remaining time in the cafeteria and other remaining activities will be covered out by volunteers Odile and Hendrik.

Mientras que todavía hay muchas diferencias entre los niños, hemos visto mucho progreso en ellos. Casi la mitad de los estudiantes muestran mucha fuerza en a lo menos un material, y sólo algunos que muestran problemas en las cosas básicas como contar. Hemos visto mejoramiento también en la actitud de los niños. Hay unos que son más fuertes y otros más pasivos, pero hemos vistos que unos que eran antes más pasivos ya tienen más confianza.

Adicionalmente, la profesora Maria Fernanda está con licencia de maternidad, y será reemplazada por otro profesor que trabajará de 9:00 a 12:00. Los voluntarios Hendrik y Odile se encargarán del comedor y del demás tiempo con los niños.

An Exciting New Program / Un programa nuevo

The CENIT library has now been open for one month, and so far is a great success. The children from the primary school, ESTAR and the college come everyday to either read the books or play with the puzzles and games available. The ABC and Winnie the Pooh puzzles are the most popular!

We also have reading time, when the children all listen with great interest to stories such as The 3 Pigs and Pinocchio. A lot of the high school students have found useful information in the fact books – so the library is a definite homework helper!

In the mornings the kids from the market outreach program also come to the library as a special outing. To date this has been successful and some of the artwork produced by the market children while in the library now has pride of place on the library walls. Our quantity of books is increasing all the time due to generous donations from many different sources. We even received a box of books from class 3C2 in Newchurch in Switzerland!

Our library has really kicked off with great success — long may it continue!

La biblioteca en CENIT ha estado abierta durante un mes, y hasta ahora es un gran éxito. Los niños de ESTAR y del colegio vienen cada día a leer o jugar con las juguetes y rompecabezas que hay. Los rompecabezas de 'ABC' y 'Winnie the Pooh' son los más populares con todos!
También tenemos un tiempo de leer, cuando los niños escuchen con gran interés cuentas tal como 'Los 3 Cerditos' y 'Pinochio'. Muchos de los estudiantes del colegio han encontrado mucha información útil entre los libros basados en hechos – entonces les ayuda la biblioteca con sus deberes!

Por las mañanas vienen los niños del programa rescate de calle, es una excursión especial para ellos. Eso ha sido un éxito grande y muchos de los dibujos hecho por los niños cuando están en la biblioteca, hora están por las paredes — y son lindos!

La cuantidad de libros esta incrementando a debido de los donaciones generosas de una variedad de fuentes. Por ejemplo, hemos recibimos una caja de libros de una clase de Newchurch en Suiza.

La biblioteca ha empezado con tanto éxito que esperamos que pueda continuar así.

Workshops and Sales / Talleres y Ventas

Art Workshop / Clase de Arte

In the past few months, many things have happened within the art workshop. First, we took all of the paintings that haven't been sold within the past couple years, and repainted them in class. As a result, the women have learned new techniques while painting and more paintings have been sold. Recently, there have been up to seven women that attended class but on average there is about five that come regularly. One of the women, Suzy, has been selling a good amount of paintings each week so we decided to put half of her earnings away separately. This money will go to opening her own stand for her and her husband whether it is in the El Ejido Park or another artisan market. Ideally, we would like to do this for all of the women.

En los últimos meses, muchas cosas han pasado dentro del taller de arte. Primero, sacamos todos los cuadros de la pared que no habían sido vendidos por uno o dos años y los pintamos de nuevo en la clase con las mujeres. Resulta que las mujeres aprendieron técnicas nuevas mientras pintan en las clases y se venden más cuadros. Recientemente, había siete mujeres en la clase pero normalmente tenemos cinco que vienen casi todas las semanas. Una de las mujeres, Suzy, vende muchos cuadros durante todas las semanas, entonces decidimos que íbamos a guardar la mitad de las ventas de los cuadros en una caja separada. Ese dinero es guardado con la finalidad que Suzy se ponga un puesto en el Ejido o en el Mercado Artesanal. Lo ideal seria hacerlo así para todas las mujeres.

Jewelry Workshop / Clases de Bisutería

For some time now 5 women have attended the jewellery class. The jewellery class is every Monday and every Wednesday. We are doing a lot of things, like bracelets, necklaces and earrings. From their work, the women earn some money. They get 70% of the money which we receive from our sales. The rest is for CENIT, so we can buy new materials.

Durante algun tiempo vienen aproxidamente 5 mujeres a la Bisuteria. La Bisuteria es dos dias lunes y miércoles. Hacemos muchas cosas como collares, pulseras y aretes. Con el trabajo las mujeres pueden ganar un poco de dinero. 70% de las venta reciben las mujeres y el resto recibe CENIT. Asi podemos comprar nuevas cosas para ayudar a otros programas.

Leather Class / Clase de Cuero

Since the last newsletter a lot of things have changed in the leather class. Estefania and Ana are no longer working in the leather class, they have been replaced by Jessica and Margarita — two other girls from CENIT's High School.

Elfrun Naegele who has been teaching the leather class since September has finished her work at CENIT and has gone home. Elizabeth Tinhofer has taken her job and is teaching the leather class right now.

The leather class has just received another order from Germany. Most of the ordered products have been made since the beginning of this year's leather class. Some other companies have also expressed interest in ordering products from the catalogue.

We also renewed the products put out in the Mariscal and sold products at the South American Explorers Club during the CENIT presentation.

Desde la ultima revista en diciembre muchas cosas cambiaron en la clase de cuero. Estefania y Ana ahora no están en la clase de cuero pero dos nuevas niñas reemplezan a las dos niñas, la Jessica y la Margarita del colegio de CENIT.

La profesora Elfrun Naegele que enseño la clase de cuero desde el mes de septiembre terminó su trabajo en CENIT y regresó a Alemania. Elizabeth Tinhofer está realizando el trabajo de Elfrun.

La clase de cuero recibió otra orden de Alemania. La majoria de los productos que fueron pedidos fue elaborada desde el inicio de la clase de cuero del año 2007. Algunas otras compañías expresaron interés en pedir productos de la clase de cuero.

Cambiamos los productos que estaban presentados en el Mariscal y también vendimos productos en el South American Explorers Club durante la presentación sobre el CENIT.

Production / Producción

The production department is running fine at the moment. With the help of a new Volunteer from the United States we were able to repair the mixers both in the Tarjetería and the kitchen.

Due to recent visits of student groups from the United States sales have been strong in the last months. The presentation at the South American Explorers was a success and we not only sold products but also attracted new volunteers to CENIT.

El departamento de producción esta funcionando muy bien en este momento. Con la ayuda de una nueva voluntaria de los Estados Unidos reparamos las licuadoras en la Tarjeteria y en la cocina.

A causa de visitas de grupos de estudiantes de los Estados Unidos las ventas estuvieron muy bien en los meses anteriores. La presentación el el South American Explorers Club fue un éxito. No solamente vendimos productos sino tambien captamos nuevos voluntarios.

Helping with Healthcare / Ayuda con la Salud

The Clinic / La Clínica

The clinic has been very busy making small changes to improve its efficiency and ability to serve the CENIT population better. Fernanda has utilized her knowledge and many contacts in the pharmacy sector in Ecuador and managed to get us lower than wholesale prices on most of your family planning medication and supplies. We are now paying less than many pharmacies in the area! Recently the clinic has been able to take over one of the adjoining rooms and we know have access to a bathroom which doubles as an auxiliary room to give injections and take care of general first aid. This is great because it allows us to streamline clinic hours a little better so our patients wait less and the doctors can spend more time focusing on the serious cases.

Some members of the CENIT health programs have been spending a lot of time this month helping the international public health program MEDLIFE (www.medlifeweb.org) who is beginning to work in areas like Riobamba and Quito. We hope that this new alliance will be mutually beneficial and create many advantages and opportunities for all involved. We would like to give our sincere thanks to MEDLIFE for their generous donations of medication and equipment.

Once again the clinic must say goodbye and hello to volunteers. We would like to express our appreciation and excitement about Cora and Caroline, our two new clinic volunteers and Marc, who is helping out in the street clinic as well as working on several special hygiene related health campaigns and is currently organizing a program to guarantee a steady flow of donated medicine and equipment from the US to Ecuador. Unfortunately we must also say goodbye and good luck to a hard worker volunteer who has been helping us out in the street and CENIT clinics for almost 6 months now. We wish Hannah lots of luck in her studies back in Germany, and hope that she stays just as passionate about health and social justice.

La clínica ha estado muy ocupada haciendo pequeños cambios para mejorar su eficiencia para servir la población de CENIT mejor. Fernanda ha utilizado su cantidad de experiencia y contactos para bajar los precios que pagamos para casi todos nuestros medicamentos de Planificación Familiar y ahora estamos pagando menos que muchas farmacias! Recientemente hemos crecido a aumentar la clínica con un baño que también funciona para dar inyecciones.

Este nos ha ayudado mucho para disminuir un poco el caos durante las horas cuando los doctores atienden y también les permite a ver mas pacientes en menos tiempo que antes.

Algunos miembros de programas de salud en CENIT han gastado mucho tiempo este mes pasado ayudando el programa de salud internacional MEDLIFE (www.medlifeweb.org) que está empezando a trabajar en Riobamba y Quito. Esperamos que esta nueva alianza crezca muchas ventajas y oportunidades para todos involucrados. El programa de Salud en CENIT da muchas gracias a MEDLIFE por sus donaciones de medicamentos y equipo.

Otra vez la clínica tiene que despedir y dar la bienvenida a voluntarias. Queremos expresar nuestro agradecimiento a las nuevas voluntarias Cora y Carolina que trabajan en la clínica, y a Marc que esta trabajando con Fernanda en la calle en adición unas campañas especiales incluyendo higiene general y un programa para garantizar el flujo de medicamentos de los EEUU a Ecuador. Lamentablemente también tenemos que decir chao a una voluntaria bien trabajadora quien trabajaba en la clínica y la calle. Street Clinic / Clínica de la Calle

After the departure of Clínica de la Calle's founder, Nurse Liz Collins, the Clínica de la Calle team, including Fernanda and myself, has been trying hard to keep the connections with patients strong. Hannah Beck's enthusiasm about the work and desire to push the program forward have greatly helped our monitoring of the health of many patients in the various markets and we and the patients will greatly miss her help.

We continue to see patients in four south Quito markets: Mayorista, Santa Maria, San Roque and Camal, seeing between 20 and 30 people every day. We continue to monitor patients with problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, gastritis and other common but untreated problems. Along with giving basic medications to patients diagnosed with medical conditions and educating women about family planning we refer new patients to our free clinic to confer with our internist or gynecologist. In addition, because of CENIT's relatively recent work in San Roque we have been going there with a doctor once a month to diagnose problems, increase awareness of Clínica de la Calle, the free clinic and CENIT. The constant growth of the Clínica de la Calle program and awareness of CENIT in the markets has helped many people and will continue to do so with the great support we receive from donors abroad.

Después de la despedida de la fundadora de la Clínica de la Calle, enfermera Liz Collins, el equipo de la Clínica de la Calle, incluyendo Fernanda y yo, hemos estado trabajando duro para mantener las conexiones con los pacientes. El entusiasmo de Hannah Beck sobre el trabajo y su deseo de avanzar el programa han ayudado en la continuidad la salud de muchos de los pacientes en los mercados. Nosotros y los pacientes vamos a extrañar su ayuda mucho. Continuamos visitando a los pacientes en cuatro mercados del sur de Quito: Mayorista, Santa Maria, San Roque y el Camal y atendemos entre 20 y 30 pacientes cada día. También continuamos con el control de los pacientes quienes tienen problemas incluyendo alta presión, diabetes, gastritis, y otros problemas comunes pero sin tratamiento. Además de dar medicamentos básicos a las pacientes quienes han estado diagnosticado con condiciones medicales, educamos a las mujeres sobre planificación familiar y remitimos las pacientes nuevas a la clínica gratis de CENIT para consultar con el médico interno o el ginecólogo. Además, porque CENIT recién llegó al mercado San Roque hemos estado asistiendo allá con un médico mensualmente para diagnosticar problemas y aumentar la conciencia de Clínica de la Calle, y la clínica gratis de CENIT. El desarrollo constante del programa Clínica de la Calle y conocimiento de CENIT en los mercados han ayudado a muchas personas y continuará así con el superapoyo para todas las familias, además contamos con ciertos donantes del exterior.

Dentist Program / Programa Dentista

All's going well in the dentist programme. We are continuing with the treatment of the ESTAR kids, as well as the more urgent cases in the markets and other programmes. Since the ESTAR kids are a bit older, a lot of them have problems with the new permanent teeth growing crooked when there isn't enough space in the mouth. So, there are quite a lot that need X-rays and even braces. So that we can cover the increased costs, the dentists in El Camal are now only charging US-$6.50 a day, and normally we take 3 kids per day, so they're not actually earning anything for the work the do for us — we're really grateful for their help!

We've also started a subproject in Mayorista market in which we hope to take all the children in the group for dental checks. It's now much easier to do this because we have an arrangement with the "El Carmen" health center just next to the market, so we don't have to trek all the way over to El Camal. But a lot of the kids are really scared of going (and some are hard to control!), so progress has been slow.

En el programa dentista todo sigue bien. Continuamos tratando a los chicos de ESTAR, y también a los casos más urgentes de los mercados y otros programas. Específicamente los niños de ESTAR son mayores, muchos tienen problemas cuando los dientes permanentes salen pero no hay espacio en la boca. Entonces, hay bastante que necesitan radiografías y aún "Brace". Para que podamos cubrir los gastos alcanzados de los dentistas del Camal solo nos cobran US-$6,50 por el día y normalmente llevamos a 3 niños por día. Entonces ellos no ganan nada del trabajo que hacen — ¡estamos muy agradecidos por su ayuda!

Además, hemos empezado un sub-proyecto en el mercado Mayorista para llevar a todos los niños del grupo al dentista. Ahora es mucho más fácil llevarles porque tenemos un acuerdo con el centro de salud "El Carmen" justo al lado del mercado, así que no tenemos que ir tan lejos. Sin embargo, muchos de los niños tienen miedo de ir (¡y algunos son simplemente difíciles de tratar!), entonces el proyecto sigue despacio.

Adopt-a-Dream / Invierte en una Vida

Adopt-a-Dream continues to grow, increasing access to education for children and providing specialized services to them and their families. This last month ended with a field trip for all the children in the program, made possible though the help of a Dutch organization working in Quito to provide recreational activities for disadvantaged and handicapped children. On the last Sunday of the month, all of the children of Invierte-en-una-Vida met early at CENIT to be transported to La Merced, public hot springs in the north of the city. The children, most of whom had never been in a pool before, spent a really lovely day relaxing and splashing in the springs, followed by a free lunch and some soccer on the fields adjoining the pools. In the next few months, we look forward to organizing another such trip to celebrate the end of the school year and all of the kid’s hard work.

Invierte-en-una-Vida sigue creciendo, mejorando el acceso a educación y proveyendo servicios particulares a nuestros niños y sus familias. El mes pasado culminó con un paseo por todos los niños del programa, hecho posible con la ayuda de una fundación holandesa que trabaja para brindar paseos gratis a niños pobres y niños con problemas mentales. El último domingo del mes, fuimos todos a unas piscinas de aguas termales en el norte de la ciudad, se llaman La Merced. La mayoría de los niños nunca habían idos a una piscina antes, pero todos disfrutaron la experiencia a lo máximo, pasando el día relajando y nadando en el agua. Ellos terminaron el día con un almuerzo completo y un juego de fútbol en la concha al lado de la piscina. En los próximos meses, estamos esperando organizar otro paseo para los niños, para celebrar el fin del año escolar y todo el trabajo que han realizado durante el periodo del año lectivo.

Play Therapy / Tutoría de Juegos

These are our children:

Angie: She is staying with us because she is quite shy. But now she is coming to Tutoria nearly every time and sometimes, when we miss her at home, her sister is bringing her later to Cenit.
Yasmin: Yasmin is also very shy and is always trying to get confirmation in whatever she does but she has already got a lot more self-confidence.
Alex: Alex is a three year old boy, he is very active and he is not able to sit quietly for a long time. Even if we sometimes have difficulty with him staying at the table, he has improved a lot since he joined Tutoria.
Nicole: She is five years old and doesn't concentrate for a long time. We always try to teach her the colours and do calming activities with her where she has to concentrate on what she's doing.
Nicole: She has really improved a lot in Tutoria de Juegos. Now she is coming regularly with us and she doesn't make any more problems on the way to CENIT. She doesn't talk a lot for a three year old, but she is very capable at doing work with her hands.
Morelia: She has been in this program of CENIT for a long time but as she is already nine years old she is going to school right now. Apparently she likes going there and already found some friends to play with during the breaks.

This is what we are doing:
Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon we pick these children up at the market and take them to CENIT. We are doing handicrafts with paper, glue, paintings and other materials. After the calm activity, the children can play freely in our room which has a lot of games, puzzles and books.

Recently we created colourful butterflies and caterpillars out of paper to decorate the walls. We also made "cakes" composed of chocolate and cornflakes. The children really enjoyed making them and of course eating them afterwards!

Estos son los niños:

Angie: Está con nosotros porque es bastante tímida. Pero ahora casi cada vez viene a Tutoría y a veces, cuando no la encontramos en casa, su hermana la lleva.
Yasmin: También es muy tímida y siempre pide confirmación en lo que hace pero ya tiene más confianza en su misma.
Alex: Es un chico de tres años, muy activo y no se puede quedar tranquillo mucho tiempo. Aunque a veces tenemos problemas con el para que se quede en la mesa, el mejoró mucho durante el tiempo que viene a Tutoría.
Nicole: Ella tiene 5 años y no se concentra mucho. Con ella intentamos de enseñarle los colores y hacer actividades tranquilas donde tiene que concentrarse en lo que hace.
Nicole: Ella mejoró muchísimo en Tutoría de Juegos. Ahora viene regularmente con nosotras y no hace más problemas en el camino. Con sus tres años no habla mucho pero sabe muy bien trabajar con sus manos.
Morelia: Lleva mucho tiempo en este programa de CENIT pero como ya tiene nueve años, se fue a la escuela ahora. Al parecer le gusta irse allá y ya encontró amigos con quien juega durante la recreación.

Esto hacemos:
Cada lunes, miércoles y jueves por la tarde recogemos estos niños del mercado y les llevamos a CENIT. Allí hacemos trabajos manuales con papel, goma, pinturas y otras materiales. Después de una actividad tranquila, los niños pueden jugar liberalmente en nuestro cuarto que tiene muchos juegos como rompecabezas y libros.

Recién hicimos mariposas y gusanos colorados de papel para decorar las paredes. También hicimos "pasteles" de chocolate y cereales. Les gustó mucho hacerlo pero se comieron todo al final.

Literacy Classes / Clases de Alfabetización

At the moment, there is just one student receiving basic literacy classes. This lady comes almost every day at 2.30 to improve her knowledge of reading or writing. When she first came to CENIT to start studying she didn't know how to read or write. We are both pleased, the lady and myself as teacher, that she has improved so much in just two months. Now she can read texts and short stories and is already starting to write her first letters. But the best thing is that she is continuing to study and isn't going to give up. Previously I was teaching more women with the same motivation and the same level, but little by little they lost faith and stopped coming. I hope that the lady who is attending classes now will serve as a good example so that more students will come in the future and with the same determination.

De momento participa solo una estudiante en las clases de alfabetización. Esta señora viene casi todos los días a las dos y media para mejorar sus conocimientos de escritura y lectura. Cuando acudió la primera vez a CENIT para empezar a estudiar, no sabía ni leer ni escribir. Por eso podemos estar felices, tanto la señora como yo, profesor de alfabetización, que haya avanzado tanto en tan solo 2 meses. Ahora puede leer textos y cuentos pequeños y ya comienza a escribir sus primeras cartas. Pero lo mejor de todo es que aún sigue estudiando y que no deja de luchar. Antes tenia mas estudiantes en mis clases con la misma motivación y el mismo nivel, pero poco a poco las mujeres perdieron la fe y dejaron de venir. Espero que la señora que esta en las clases ahora sirva de un buen ejemplo para que más estudiantes vengan en el futuro con las mismas metas.

Learning English at CENIT / Aprender Inglés en CENIT

In the English Classes, there are currently 3 volunteers teaching Basic English to the children of first, second and third level. We have classes with the first level once a week for one hour and twenty minutes, with the second level twice a week for forty minutes and with the third level also twice a week for forty minutes.

In Level 1 we are trying to teach Basic things like food, animals, colours, the family, and a few weeks ago we started with some more complex phrases and expressions. One of the difficulties is the range of abilities; some children already know some English while others can't yet read or write.

In Level 2 we are teaching a higher level. We are trying to work with more with complete sentences and less with individual words. We are covering more or less the same topics. We have some discipline problems with the children. There have been some English classes where we have wasted a lot of time due to behavioural problems.

With the children in Level 3, we cover the same topics as with the other two levels, although at a higher level and the students can already say a few things in English. Occasionally there are discipline problems but mostly work is going well with the 3rd level.

En las clases de ingles estamos ahora con tres voluntarios para enseñar lo básicos de ingles a los niños de primer, segundo y tercer nivel. Tenemos clases con el primer nivel una vez la semana x una hora y veinte minutos, con el segundo nivel tres dos veces la semana x 40 minutos y con el tercer nivel dos veces la semana también x 40 minutos.

En el primer nivel intentamos a enseñar cosas fáciles como comida, animales, colores, la familia, pero también empezamos hace pocas semanas con primeras frases y expresiones mas difíciles. Problemas son las grandes diferencias entre los niños. Algunos ya saben un poco de ingles, algunos aun no pueden leer ni escribir.

En el segundo nivel estamos enseñando cosas con un nivel mas alto que en el primer nivel. Intentamos trabajar más con frases completas y menos con palabras solas. Las temas son mas o menos las mismas como en el primer nivel. Problemas tenemos con la disciplina de los niños. Había clases de ingles en donde no escribimos ni una palabra de ingles en la pizarra porque que tuvimos que arreglar muchas cosas con los niños como peleas o su comportamiento.

Con los niños del tercer nivel hablamos como en los otros dos niveles sobre temas como comida, familia, números, … El nivel es por supuesto más alto y los alumnos ya pueden hablar pocas cosas en ingles. Problemas sólo hay a veces con la disciplina de ellos, pero normalmente estamos con mucho gusto en el tercer nivel.

Physical Education Classes / Clases de Educación Física

In ESTAR, Tim — a volunteer from Germany — is assisting the Physical Education teacher one afternoon per week, with the aim that the children can get rid of negative energies and take an interest in sport.

In the Physical Education Classes we take the children from 2nd and 3rd level to a football ground. Generally the children are really keen to play football, there are only a few pupils who don't like to play. These pupils spend some time in the park next to the football ground. I was surprised that almost all the boys already knew how to play football really well and that some of the girls as well are good footballers. We have some football shirts from a club in Germany and with these the children look like little football stars!

En la Escuela ESTAR: El voluntario Tim de Alemania se interesó por ayudarle al profesor de educación física, una tarde a la semana, con la finalidad que los niños/as liberen energías negativas y que se interesen por el deporte.

En las clases de educación física nos llevamos una vez la semana a los niños del segundo y tercer nivel a una cancha de fútbol. Generalmente los niños tienen mucho interés de jugar fútbol, sólo hay algunas alumnas que no les gusta jugar. Ellas entonces están a lado de la cancha en un pequeño parque. Una sorpresa para mi fue que casi todos los chicos saben jugar fútbol muy bien y que también algunas chicas son buenas futbolistas. También tenemos camisas de un equipo alemán y así los niños parecen a veces como pequeñas estrellas de fútbol.
