Leather Project

Aim

This project aims to provide high school girls with an economically viable skill while increasing their self-confidence and responsibility.

Based on the reality that the girls will inevitably spend their mornings working, the leather projects aims to provide them with a fair wage in a safe and encouraging work environment.

Cuero Class of 2006/2007

Project Information

The leather project works with approximately 8 students in CENIT's high school Rosa Virginia. Participants are selected based on their school citizenship and academic performance. In the classes, which take place Monday to Thursday morning, the girls are instructed in making a variety of leather products such as handbags, belts and wallets. They are also encouraged to be more responsible, to value their studies, and to develop a strong work ethic. Products from the class are sold by the CENIT and its support organizations in Germany and the UK. The girls earn a direct percentage from the sales of the leather products and thus can make a much-needed contribution to the income of their family. The remainder of the income from sales is reinvested in new materials or invested in occasional recreational and educational activities for the girls.

Volunteer Requirements

A volunteer in this program must be at CENIT for six months, and must have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish. An ideal volunteer would have experience in leatherwork or handicrafts and a willingness to lead a group of young women. Volunteers are expected to be in the leather workshop every morning, and must also spend time outside of these hours buying and cutting leather and working on the publicity, marketing, and sales of the leather products.
