Welcome to the first 2007 edition of CENIT Ahora! We hope this newsletter finds you all doing well in the New Year and that you were able to spend some time with friends and loved ones during the holiday season. We find ourselves doing well at CENIT as 2007 gets underway with a strong team of volunteers and dedicated employees. Included in this newsletter you’ll find news about all of our programs, which we’ve tried to make as up-to-date as possible. Certainly, if you have any questions or comments about what’s going on here, please don’t hesitate to be in touch at contact@cenitecuador.org.

Additionally, as we wrap up the last year, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those of you whose generosity made 2006 such a successful year for CENIT. It’s important to mention the hard working people here in Quito, but it’s also equally important to recognize all of the efforts being made across the world to make CENIT such a successful place. Thank you for your generosity and support of what are truly needy CENIT families. We look forward to hearing from many of you, and may you have a healthy and happy New Year!

Bienvenidos a la primera publicación de CENIT Ahora en el año 2007! Esperamos que esta revista les encuentre bien y que pudieron pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos durante las Navidades. Aquí en CENIT nos encontramos bien a principios del 2007, con un equipo fuerte de voluntarios y educadores. En esta edición podrán leer noticias de todos nuestros programas, que hemos intentado hacer lo mas actual posible. Pero seguramente, si tienen más preguntas o comentarios sobre lo que esta pasando aquí en Ecuador, no dudes en escribirnos a contact@cenitecuador.org.

Adicionalmente, quiero aprovechar la oportunidad del fin del 2006 para decir gracias a todos ustedes quienes nos apoyaron durante el ultimo año. Es importante reconocer el equipo que está trabajando aquí en Quito, pero también es sumamente importante reconocer todos los esfuerzos a nivel mundial para apoyar a CENIT. The New Website / La Nueva Página Web

As I am sure you have noticed, this newsletter is the first in an all-new format. This has to do with our updated website – over the Christmas break, www.cenitecuador.org has been switched over to a new and updated system. The new site now runs in a Content Management System, which makes it much easier for us to keep the contents up to date – actually, we already updated some of the information. Specifically, check out our new and improved donation information page and the new "How Far Your Money Goes Page ". Even if that doesn't interest you, have a look at the new design or the Spanish translation.

Along with the new website, we now also use a new system for sending the newsletter which is the reason for the new format you are seeing. It also means that the newsletter is now fully integrated on the page, so you can subscribe and unsubscribe there. All newsletter contents will now automatically appear on the website once they are published, so if you missed an issue or want to go back to some previous information, you can do so in the CENIT News section.

Naturally, such a major change always causes some quirks, so if you have any problems with the website or the newsletter, please email Magnus at webmaster@cenitecuador.org.

Como seguro se ha dado cuenta, esa revista es la primera en un formato completamente nuevo. Eso tiene que ver con nuestra nueva página web – entre la Navidad y el Año Nuevo, cambiamos www.cenitecuador.org a usar un sistema nueve y actualizado. La nueva página usa un "Content Management System", lo cual nos hace mucho más fácil actualizar sus contenidos – de hecho, ya hemos actualizado algunas partes. Específicamente, vaya a conocer la página actualizada y mejorada "¿Cómo Donar? " y la nueva página "Cuanto Compraría Su Donación ". Si eso no le interesa, todavía puede conocer el nuevo diseño y – tal vez más importante – la traducción al español.

Junto con la nueva página, también cambiamos nuestro sistema de revistas. Ya está integrado en la página web, así que puede subscribirse y desubscribirse allá. Además, todos los contenidos de las revistas serán publicadas automáticamente en la página web. De esa manera, si se pierde una edición o quiere revisar alguna información vieja, lo puede hacer en la sección "Noticias de CENIT ".

Fresh from the Markets / Directo de los Mercados

Cisnes

The Cisnes market has changed during the last 4 months. There aren’t as many children as there were this past summer when we sometimes had about 25 to 30 kids to work with. The main reasons are that parents oblige their children to work and that many children returned to school in the fall. Also, we sometimes have to work hard to convince the parents that what we are doing is worthwhile; they too can be a barrier to our success. That’s why we only have between 10 to 20 children at the moment and three volunteers working with them.

El mercado Cisnes estaba cambiando durante los últimos cuatro meses. Ya no asisten tantos niños como en los meses de verano, cuando había a veces entre 25 y 30 chicos y chicas. La razón principal es que algunas madres les prohíben a sus hijos venir a jugar por el trabajo que tienen que hacer. Otras mujeres no quieren que se vayan sus hijos. Por eso estamos trabajando para aumentar la confianza de los padres de familia. Así tenemos entre 10 y 20 niños y al momento hay tres voluntarios que trabajan en este mercado.

Caballos

At the moment we have between 5 and 15 children in the Caballos market. The children are between 2 and 11 years old. The older ones don’t come as regularly but since November we have had the help of a Spanish painter who comes every Monday to Thursday to teach the children how to draw. They really like this and therefore they are now attending more regularly. Three of the boys draw very well: it is the first time that they have drawn portraits, still lives, or nature scenes. They get a lot of self-confidence out of this. The little ones learned the alphabet song this week and they are very proud of themselves. Also, we are doing a lot of Christmas activities right now.

Cada día asisten entre 5 y 15 niños. La edad de los niños oscila entre 2 y 11 años. Los mayores no vienen regularmente, pero ahora (desde noviembre) tenemos un pintor español que viene cada lunes y jueves para dibujar con los mayores. A los chicos les gusta mucho y por eso ahora vienen más regularmente. Tres de los mayores dibujan muy bien. Por ejemplo, para ellos es la primera vez que dibujan retratos, o algo de la naturaleza. De esa actividad reciben mucha auto-estima. Los chiquitos aprendieron la canción del alfabeto esta semana y están muy orgullosos de si mismos. Y claro, ahora estamos haciendo muchas cosas relacionadas con la Navidad.

Mayorista

Christmas is approaching and Mayorista has said goodbye to some of our volunteers and welcomed 2 new colleagues. Since mid-November we have started walking 8 rows of the market to get children, which is the whole fruit and vegetable market. Although not all the parents of these rows are as willing to send their children with us, we already have some regular children from these rows, such as Brenda and Michelle. But still, row five has the most participating children. Jenny, the sister of Pamela and Carlos, goes to Nivelaciones at CENIT. The sisters Michelle and Evelyn started to come daily, just like Brian, row one, who doesn’t miss a day. Our group of visiting children is growing. Every day we have more than 20 children, a nice but busy group. We are sure that all our hard work to provide more structure for the program is paying off and we are motivated to keep on going with Mayorista! Thanks to all the volunteers from September 2006 until now – you did it!

La Navidad está en camino y Mayorista se ha despedido de algunos de nuestros voluntarios y ha dado la bienvenida a dos nuevos. Desde mediados de noviembre empezamos a recorrer tres filas de puestos en el mercado para recoger niños, lo que es el mercado de frutas y legumbres entero. Aunque no todos padres en esas filas están dispuestos a mandar sus hijos con nosotros, ya tenemos algunos regulares, por ejemplo Brenda y Michelle. Aún así, la fila cinco todavía tiene la mayor número de niños participando. Jenny, la hermana de Pamela y Carlos, va a Nivelaciones en CENIT. Las hermanas Michelle y Evelyn empezaron a venir diariamente, igual como Brian, de la fila uno, que nunca falta ni un día. Nuestro grupo de niños visitantes es creciendo también. Cada día tenemos más de 20 niños, un bonito pero pesado grupo. Estamos seguros de que todo nuestro trabajo para darle más estructura al programa nos ayudará y estamos motivados a seguir adelante con Mayorista! Gracias a todos los voluntarios desde septiembre 2006 hasta ahora – lo lograron!

Registro

We are trying to form a soccer team with the boys of Registro Civil and are training two times a week on a soccer field near where they work. Our goal is to get them to join a neighborhood league, although for right now this is very difficult because they are only three to six boys which is not enough to form a team. So, we are looking for more boys who are interested in participating. Thus far, we have played a game against the CENIT volunteers and the boys beat the volunteers 15 to 7, which was a great success for Registro.

Con los chicos del registro civil estoy entrenando 2 veces por semana en una cancha de fútbol cerca de su trabajo. Estamos entrenando por un equipo de fútbol que puede participar en una liga barrial. Pero eso parece muy difícil porque sólo tenemos entre 3 y 6 chicos, lo que no es suficiente parar formar un equipo. Por eso estamos buscando más chicos que quieren participar en el entrenamiento y en el equipo. Hasta hoy solo hicimos un partido contra los voluntarios de CENIT. Ganamos con los chicos del registro civil como 15:7, que fue un buen éxito para los del registro. Ojalá podamos hacer mas partidos como este en el futuro, hasta que estemos en una liga barrial.

Santa Maria

Generally, things are going really well at the market. We are not having any bigger problems with the organization, the behavior of the children or the motivation of the volunteers. During the last month, Celeste (a six-year-old girl whose mother left for Spain) was being very difficult and was not behaving well at all. Still, little by little, her behavior is getting better. Sometimes it is very tough because the other children imitate her. One time, she stole limes from a private house and the others did just the same. We believe that what she needs is adult attention. Still, we hope to be able to help her as well as the other children in the market.

En general, todo va muy bien en el mercado. No tenemos ningún problema grande con la organización, el comportamiento de los niños, ni con la motivación de los voluntarios. Durante el mes pasado, Celeste (una niña que tiene 6 años y cuya mama se fue a España) ha sido muy difícil y se ha portado muy mal, pero paso a paso está mejorando su comportamiento. A veces fue bastante difícil porque los otros niños siguen lo que Celeste hace. Una vez robó limones de una casa privada, y los otros niños hicieron lo mismo. Pensamos que lo que necesita es atención de adultos. De todos modos, esperamos poder ayudarle a ella así como a los otros niños.

Trole

To be honest, not much has changed in Trole over the past 3 months. The regulars continue to be Patricio, Luis, Gallo, and Fernando, who spend the bulk of their days outside the Centro Comercial Recreo, shining shoes or waiting to shine shoes. They are all doing reasonably well and do not have any huge problems other than their low wages. The biggest news to share is that we recently received a donation that will fund their participation in the football program that is currently going on with the boys from Registro Civil. The donation will cover their transport, uniforms and any other related expense for roughly 6 months. The big question now is how involved they will actually become. They have all expressed a lot of interest in becoming involved in this program, however how that interest actually translates into action is yet to be seen. I have high hopes for the boys and think that we can use the football league as a stepping stone to get them involved in other things that would be beneficial to their well-being (trade school, better jobs, etc.). Right now we are just waiting to see how it all pans out…

De verdad, no ha pasado mucho en Trole durante los últimos 3 meses. Patricio, Luis, Gallo y Fernando siguen como los “chicos” más regulares. Ellos pasan la mayoría de sus días afuera del Centro Comercial Recreo, lustrando botas o esperando para lustrar botas. Ellos no tienen problemas graves, solo sus sueldos bajos. La noticia más grande es que nosotros recién recibimos una donación para los chicos que podemos usar para pagar su participación en la liga de fútbol en Registro Civil. La donación es suficiente para pagar su transporte, uniformes y otros gastos asociados con la liga por más o menos 6 meses. La cuestión ahora es como ellos realmente van a involucrarse. Todos han expresado mucho interés en el programa, pero tenemos que esperar para ver si este interés realmente se traduzca en acción. Espero que los chicos se involucran mucho en el programa, porque podemos usar esta liga como un pequeño paso en un camino a subir su autoestima e involucrarlos en otros programas que puedan ser muy beneficiosos a sus bienestares (escuelas de oficios, trabajos mejores, etc.). Ya solo estamos esperando para ver como salga.

Other CENIT Programs / Otros Programas del CENIT

San Roque

Two weeks ago we moved to another room. This room is much more comfortable than the last one. Every day there are new children. Since the two months that this project exists, the children have learned and improved a lot. They have learned the colors, a song and how to paint. But there is still the problem of their aggressive behavior. We are having Christmas activities this week and at last we are having a Christmas party where there will be dance and gifts for the children.

Desde hace dos meses contamos con un espacio much más agradable y acogedor que el anterior. Todos los días vienen nuevos niños. Ahora tenemos 35 niños en la mañana. En los dos meses que existe este proyecto, los niños han aprendido y avanzado mucho. Han aprendido algunos colores, una canción y a pintar. Pero aún sigue el problema con los niños que son bastante agresivos. Esta semana hacemos actividades navideñas y como punto final tendremos una fiesta de navidad con baile y regalos, donde hemos invitado a todas las personas que han hecho posible la apertura de este proyecto para los niños.

Tutoría de Juegos

At the moment we do not have many children. We are hoping for more children after Christmas, though, because that will be nicer for the others and I guess there are a lot of children who would benefit from joining Tutoría de Juegos. Most of our children come happily to Tutoría, because we can give them the attention they need. It really gives me energy to see the children grow up. You might not know it, but they are so thankful for your work. I never will forget my time with this children and I hope that we can keep up the good work!

One of our children left Tutoría de Juegos. She is nine years old and doesn’t go to school because her mother doesn’t give her permission. We tried to put her in Nivelaciones but she didn’t like it, so she stopped already. We hope that we can find another solution for her with the help of a social worker.

En el momento no tenemos muchos niños. Esperamos que vengan más niños después de la Navidad, ya que será un mejor ambiente para los otros y también pensamos que hay muchos niños más que aprovecharían de ese programa. A la mayoría de nuestros niños les gusta venir a la tutoría. Les podemos dar la atención que necesitan. De verdad me da mucha energía ver como crecen los niños. Aunque no lo sepas, te agradecen tu trabajo. Yo nunca voy a olvidarme de mi tiempo con esos niños y espero que podamos seguir adelante con ese trabajo.

Uno de nuestros niños se fue de Tutoría de Juegos. Tiene nuevo años y no va a la escuela porque su madre no le da permiso. Intentamos ponerle en Nivelaciones pero no le gustó, así que ya no va. Esperamos encontrar alguna otra solución para ella. Para eso, necesitamos la ayuda de una trabajadora social.

Clases de Arte

In the art class the past couple of weeks were spent painting a giant mural in the art room with the women. The mural has an indigenous motive and could only be realized thanks to donations from friends and family of the volunteer that runs the program. Sales of paintings were strong in the pre-Christmas season, especially for Suzy with her very realistic paintings and Eulalia with Guayasamin interpretations. In the following weeks classes on drawing techniques will be held with the help of a painter from Spain who is volunteering in CENIT until the end of January.

Durante las últimas semanas las mujeres en la clase de arte pintaron un mural gigante en su sala de clase. El mural tiene un motivo indígena y fue realizado gracias a donativos de amigos y la familia de la voluntaria quien enseña la clase. Ventas fueron fuertes antes de la navidad, especialmente de los cuadros realistas de Doña Suzy y de las interpretaciones de Guayasamín de Doña Eulalia. En las próximas semanas vamos a enseñar varias técnicas de dibujar con el apoyo de un pintor de España, quien trabaja en CENIT hasta el fin de enero.

Producción

In the last months, the Production department sold a lot of products from the Clase de Cuero to Germany and also organized two volunteer sales. While the first one was a great success the second one did not go so well, mostly due to the absence of a lot of volunteers.

For the New Year, the primary goal of the Production department is to establish new and constant channels to distribute CENIT products, preferably to the US and the EU. But nevertheless sales inside Ecuador to volunteers and to stores in the Mariscal are still the most important. At the moment, we are also trying to work out a program for a South American Explorers Club night sale.

En los meses pasados el departamento de producción vendió muchos productos de la clase de cuero a organizaciones en Alemania. También organizó dos ferias de venta para los voluntarios. La primera feria fue un gran éxito pero la segunda no salió tan bien debido a la ausencia de muchos voluntarios.

Para el próximo año el departamento de producción quiere crear nuevas formas más permanentes para vender productos de CENIT en los Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea. Pero ventas en Ecuador – a los voluntarios y a tiendas en el Mariscal – siguen siendo las fortalezas. En este momento, además estamos tratando de crear un programa para el South American Explorers Club para vender productos en una noche de CENIT allá.

Clases de Inglés

We teach the children of the levels one to three basic English such as the colors, food, parts of the body, the numbers, … In the first level, this is done playfully, with lots of activities and games. In the other levels, we use more difficult games, for example "bingo" and "hangman" in English. After Christmas we want to teach them basic phrases about a variety of topics, such es the day, weather and sports.

Enseñamos los básicos del inglés a los niños del primer, segundo y tercer nivel – colores, comida, partes del cuerpo números, etc. En el primer nivel, lo hacemos de una manera ligera, con muchas actividades y juegos fáciles. En los dos niveles más avanzados igualmente trabajamos con juegos, pero con unos más difíciles, por ejemplo "bingo" y "hangman" en inglés. Después de la Navidad planeamos enseñarles frases básicos sobre una variedad de temas, como el día, el clima o los deportes.

APE

I work as a teacher's assistant with the third level class of ESTAR. The children have classes in the afternoon. In the morning, they are in APE to help with their learning. We have one week of maths and then one week of language. I help the teachers by explaining things to the class, playing educational games with the children, and finally by helping them understand their lessons.

Trabajo como una asistente del profesor en el tercer nivel del programa APE. Los niños asisten a la escuela en la tarde. En la mañana tienen clases adicionales para ayudar con su rendimiento. Tenemos una semana de matemáticas y luego una semana de lenguaje. Ayudo al profesor en explicar las lecciones en la clase, hago juegos didácticos, y finalmente ayudo a los niños para que entiendan mejor. Los niños se fueron de paseo al Museo del Agua el 15 de diciembre, sólo en la mañana.

CEA

CEA continues to be an important CENIT program. In fact, it keeps on growing. It seems that our kids really see the value in coming, as they even start to bring their friends. That way, morning CEA has grown to almost 40 children. Of course, this doesn't make working in CEA any easier. However, we were quite lucky to have a big number of volunteers – at one point 16 between the morning and afternoon group. Unfortunately, as is to be expected before Christmas, many are leaving these months. We are assured, however, that many more are on their way…

Big news regarding the CEA room: over the last two weeks, the parents and volunteers completely repainted the inside, outside, tables and benches. While we're still working out some kinks (the tables are still not completely dry), the new 'design' definitely looks quite nice. Hopefully, we can help the kids get through the pre-Christmas exams and continue to help them with their homework.

CEA sigue siendo un programa importante en el CENIT. De hecho, sigue creciendo. Obviamente, los niños conocen el valor de venir, porque incluso traen a sus amigos. De esa manera, el grupo de la mañana ya tiene casi 40 niños. Claro que eso no hace más fácil el trabajo de los voluntarios. Sin embargo, tuvimos mucha suerte con el número de voluntarios trabajando en CEA – hasta 16 entre el grupo de la mañana y la tarde. Lamentablemente, antes de la Navidad se está marchando una buena parte de ellos. Pero nos aseguraron que muchos más van a venir…

Buenas noticias sobre la sala de CEA: en las últimas dos semanas, los padres, familiares y voluntarios pintaron tanto la parte de adentro y afuera como las mesas y las bancas. Todo se ve nuevo y, aunque todavía hay problemas (la pintura de las mesas no se seca) el nuevo 'diseño' definitivamente se ve bien. Esperamos poder ayudar a los niños a superar los exámenes pre-navideños y continuar ayudándoles con sus deberes.

Adopt-a-Dream / Invierte-en-una-Vida

Adopt-a-Dream is now serving 31 children and at the start of this school year, we enrolled our first child from CENIT in a normal public high school here in the south of Quito. In the past three months, aside from the usual social work and academic support that each child in the program is guaranteed, we provided a loan for a family to obtain the documents necessary for the father to get a better-paying and safer job in a store; we worked to set up extra tutoring for a child who was struggling with his handwriting in primary school; and finally, we have been helping two orphaned sisters who recently graduated from CENIT to enroll in distance courses, which now allow them to complete their degrees while at the same time working during the day to support their younger siblings.

Right now, the children are all writing Christmas cards to their sponsor parents to thank them for the gift of their support, as well as looking forward excitedly to the holidays themselves!

Actualmente, Invierte en Una Vida está dando servicios a 31 niños y al inicio de este año escolar, inscribimos nuestro primer niño de CENIT en un colegio fiscal aquí en el sur de Quito. En los últimos tres meses, aparte del trabajo social y apoyo escolar que está garantizado a cada niño del programa, proveímos un crédito a una familia para poder coger los documentos necesarios para que el padre obtenga un trabajo mejor y seguro; trabajamos para arreglar clases de refuerzo para un niño de escuela primaria que tenia problemas con la escritura; y finalmente, ayudamos a dos hermanas huérfanas quienes recién se graduaron del colegio Rosa Virginia en encontrar un colegio a distancia, para que puedan obtener sus títulos y conseguir un trabajo para apoyar a sus hermanitos al mismo tiempo.

En este momento, los niños están escribiendo cartas navideñas para agradecerles a sus padrinos por su ayuda, mientras esperan todos con ánimos la llegada de la Navidad aquí en Quito.

Clases de Bisutería

There are currently ten women enrolled in the jewelry workshop, working every Monday and Wednesday. We continue to produce lots of beautiful products, such as bracelets, armbands and earrings. Since the women are paid for their work in this workshop, working here helps them make a life in the difficult surroundings of southern Quito.

Actualmente, diez mujeres trabajan en el taller de bisutería – cada lunes y miércoles. Seguimos produciendo muchos productos bonitos, por ejemplo collares, pulseras y aretes. Porque pagamos a los mujeres para su trabajo en ese taller, trabajar aquí les ayuda ganarse la vida en la coyuntura difícil del Sur de Quito.

Panadería

Unfortunately, the panadería is currently not functioning normally. This is because the enrolled students are not attending the classes, even though the professor is ready to go and just waiting for the students to get into the right mindset. We will keep on fighting for the promotion of this workshop and hope that many more parents and children will come here to learn.

Por el momento no esta funcionando de forma normal, debido a que las personas que se matricularon no están asistiendo. La profesora se encuentra lista para capacitar, sólo espera la predisposición se sus alumnos. Lucharemos promocionando el taller, para que vengan los padres e hijos a la capacitación.

Proyecto de Cuero

The leather class started again in October with 8 girls aged 12 to 16 who go to the CENIT High School. Two of the girls already attended the class in the previous year and can help the other girls. While most days are spent with business as usual – making products in the classroom – some recreational activities are added from time to time, for example a visit to the old town or a classroom breakfast.

In addition to our old products, a number of new designs have been created. This includes picture frames, coasters, purses, notebooks, pencil cases, can holders, bookmarks and a new design of leather belts.

Sales were strong in the past months due to sales in Germany – Zonta as well as the CJD bought products for their annual Christmas sale. While some new products were sent to Germany, most of the products sold by these organizations were designed and manufactured in the previous years. With Christmas approaching, sales in CENIT are strong due to volunteers stocking up on Christmas presents.

Currently, we are looking into new ways of the distributing the products, preferably generating a constant sales channel. Pictures and descriptions of all the products will soon be displayed on the new website as well as in a product catalog.

La clase de cuero empezó de nuevo en Octubre con 8 niñas de 12 a 16 años de edad del colegió de CENIT. Dos de las estudiantes ya estuvieron el año pasado y así pueden ayudar a las otras niñas a fabricar los productos. La mayoría de los días estamos en la sala de clase de cuero, haciendo productos, pero a veces tenemos actividades recreativas como una visita al Centro Histórico de Quito o un desayuno en la clase.

Ya no sólo tenemos los productos conocidos, sino también creamos nuevos productos: marcas, porta vasos, un bolso para damas, libretas, cartucheras, porta latas, señales y nuevos cinturones.

Las ventas estuvieron buenas en el mes pasado debido a ventas en Alemania – Zonta y el colegio CJD compraron productos para sus ferias de navidad. Mientras algunos de los productos vendidos fuero nuevos, la mayoría fueron producidos en el año pasado. Por cause de la Navidad, muchos voluntarios en el CENIT también están comprando productos como regalos.

Ahorita estamos buscando nuevas formas de vender productos de forma permanente. Fotografías y descripciones de todos los productos van a ser exhibido en la nueva página web.

Clínica de la Calle

Apart from doing the same street clinic activities as always (going to the markets to give medical help to people who don’t have enough money to go to the doctor), we started a deparasiting program in San Roque. During two weeks we went there almost every morning and afternoon to check the health of all of the kids involved in the San Roque program. We did basic health checks, looked to see if they had head lice or bad teeth to be able to recommend them for the dentist program. Afterwards we gave them medications to deparasite them because the children live in very simple and dirty conditions, so it’s pretty likely that they will have problems with parasites.

At the moment there’s a lot of change in the street clinic because Liz, the Australian nurse who established this project, is finishing her work here and going back to Australia. An Ecuadorian nurse will continue with her work. In the last two weeks, Liz has shown her all aspects of the work and has introduced her to the patients in the market, so that Fernanda (the new nurse) will be able to start in January.

Aparte de las actividades que siempre hacemos en la clínica de la calle (ir a los mercados para dar ayuda a la gente que no tiene el dinero para ir al médico), también empezamos un proyecto de desparasitación en el mercado San Roque. Así íbamos durante dos semanas casi cada mañana y tarde a San Roque para atender a todos los niños. Los examinamos para ver si tenían alguna enfermedad, piojos, y también revisamos si tenían malos dientes, para informarla a la voluntaria encargada del programa de dentista. Después, les dimos medicamentos contra parásitos en general y para las amebas, porque los niños viven en condiciones tan sencillas y sucias que es bastante probable que tienen problemas con parásitos.

Por el momento hay muchos cambios en la clínica de la calle porque Liz, la enfermera australiana que estableció este proyecto, termina su trabajo acá y va a regresar a su país. Una enfermera ecuatoriana va a continuar su trabajo. Las últimas semanas Liz enseñó todos los aspectos de su trabajo a la nueva enfermera Fernanda. Liz le presentó a la gente de los mercados para que ella pueda continuar el trabajo a partir de enero.

Clínica

Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year to all of our previous volunteers and supporters. Our new OB/GYN services have become very popular as word has spread through the community and will continue to be inexpensive and available to all those in need of them. This season has been very productive for clinic planning and we will be seeing some new programs and changes in existing programs early on in the New Year. Thanks again to all of the volunteers and donors who made this growth in clinic and dental services possible.

In other news we must say hello and goodbye to members of our clinical team. Liz Collins, nurse and Street Outreach Coordinator, is leaving us to return to Australia but has promised to return in the future. Taking her place will be Fernanda, former owner of the Farmareds pharmacy around the corner who has helped us out considerably in the past and will no doubt continue doing so with her wealth of experience and connections in the pharmaceutical world.

Feliz Navidad y un prospero año nuevo a todos nuestros voluntarios anteriores y ellos que nos han dado apoyo. Nuestros servicios nuevos ginecólogos han sido muy popular y seguirán siendo barato y disponible para las que tienen la necesidad. Este temporada ha sido muy productivo para la planificación de la clínica y esperamos muchos cambios y programas nuevos en el año que viene. Gracias a todos los donantes que hicieron posible el aumento de servicios clínicos y del programa dental.

En otras noticias tenemos que decir adiós y hola a dos miembros del equipo clínico. Liz Collins, enfermera y Coordinadora del Alcance en la Calle va a dejarnos para regresar a Australia, pero ha prometido a volver en el futuro. Reemplazando ella será Fernanda, quien tiene mucha experiencia ayudándonos cuando era dueña de la Farmacia Farmareds por la esquina de CENIT. Su experiencia y sus conexiones en el mundo farmacéutico serán un recurso muy útil para el programa.

Dentista

The dentist program has gone through a few changes of direction recently. We decided to go ahead with evaluations of all the kids in the school, first with one dentist and then we decided to use the usual dentist in the ‘Caballos’ market who said they could do it for free. They then said that there’s a university which would do both evaluations and treatment for free. Ideal – except that we had to wait about a month until they finished classes and started giving treatment at the university. By that time we found out that their waiting lists were already full. So, the dentists in ‘Caballos’ are now carrying out the work, evaluating the kids and treating them, class by class. They have offered to treat up to 5 children per day, for whatever money we can afford, which with the current budget comes to $8.50 per day. We received a very generous donation of $500 from the USA last month – thank you very much to the donors! So, in order to take 5 kids at once over to the dentist in relative safety, Axel, a German volunteer who will be here for 11 months, has now come on board as well. So far, we have done evaluations for the kinder and half the class has had treatment. They are generally very brave, incessantly cheerful and have far too much energy! Unfortunately, an awful lot of them don’t have toothbrushes and toothpaste and my stash is running low. However, I have found a cheap pharmacy that can sell us 1000 toothbrushes for $94, so we’re going to buy them, along with toothpaste, with the money that we were going to use for the evaluations, which are now free. I am also going to get in contact with dentists in England since I am going back there for a few weeks over Christmas, leaving Axel to run the program.

Ha habido varios cambios de sentido en este programa en los últimos meses. Decidimos empezar evaluaciones de cada niño en la escuela, primero con un dentista cerca de CENIT, pero luego los del consultorio que usamos normalmente en el mercado caballos dijeron que podían hacerlas gratis. Después nos dijeron que una universidad podría hacer tanto las evaluaciones como el tratamiento gratis. Perfecto – excepto que tuvimos que esperar alrededor de un mes hasta que terminaran sus clases y empezaran a tratar a niños. Después de este tiempo, nos enteramos de que la universidad ya tenía muchos niños esperando tratamiento y no pudo ayudar a los de CENIT también. Entonces, ahora los dentistas de caballos hacen el trabajo, evaluando a los niños y tratándolos clase a clase. Ofrecieron a tratar a hasta 5 niños por día por cualquier saldo que podamos pagar, el cual es, con el presupuesto actual, $8.50 por día. Nivelaciones

This program is currently being run by an Ecuadorian teacher. He has lots of patience with the children who come from very difficult families and are often mistreated. Surprisingly, the behavior of the children in class is very good. They work with lots of didactic material for the different subjects which makes learning much easier. Currently, 19 children are enrolled in this class and they are all trying very hard to learn.

Actualmente este programa esta dirigido por un pedagogo ecuatoriano, quien tiene mucha paciencia con los niños. Ellos vienen de hogares mal tratantes, pero el comportamiento de los niños es bueno en la clase. Trabajan con mucho material didáctico que es utilizado para dar las diferentes materias, lo cual facilita el aprendizaje En esta clase están 19 niños con deseos de aprender.

Kinder

In the last 3 months, we figured out how to teach actual subjects such as English, music, art and sports. We could see a lot of children who made a big process in the last couple of months. Although every child learns a lot, the differences between the students grow from day to day. The problem in a class with 30 students is that we need a lot of time to actually keep them quiet and consequently have less time to teach. The quiet ones, who often show a bigger willingness to learn, suffer a lot from that.

After 3 months of school the ministry asks for exams. Right now we try to repeat a lot of the contents we talked about in the last few weeks and months.

In the future we will get a new volunteer, who helps us with organizing activities and who will help the current volunteer Hendrik Cramer in the subjects music, English, arts and sports.

En los últimos tres meses desarrollamos las asignaturas de inglés, arte, música y educación física. Teníamos muchos niños que avanzaron mucho en los último meses. Aunque cada niño está aprendiendo mucho, algunos aprenden más rápido que otros, así que la diferencia entre los estudiantes diferentes ya es muy grande.

Un problema grande para nosotros es que necesitamos mucho tiempo para mantenerlos tranquilos y por eso tuvimos menos tiempo para enseñar. Los niños que son más tranquilos, quienes muchas veces también muestran más interés de aprender, sufren mucho de estas circunstancias.

Después de 3 meses de escuela, el Ministerio de Educación exige los exámenes en todas las asignaturas. Por eso estamos preparándolos y repitiendo los contenidos de los meses pasados.
En el futuro, una nueva voluntaria va a empezar en el jardín. Ella va a ayudarnos con la organización de actividades y en las asignaturas de inglés, arte, música y educación física.

Alfabetización

At the moment we teach seven women how to read and write. While most of the women just sometimes come to class, a few of the seven students participate more regularly. In fact, these women have the most success. Last week two volunteers who gave lessons of alphabetization left after working a hard and a long time at CENIT. Due to this, we will not hold classes of alphabetization at 4:30 and 3:30 anymore but just at 3:30.

De momento están participando siete mujeres en las clases de alfabetización. De las siete mujeres hay sólo pocas que vienen regularmente, pero son ellas que tienen el progreso más grande. La semana pasada se marcharon dos voluntarias que me ayudaban por mucho tiempo en las clases de alfabetización. Por eso, a partir de ese diciembre ya no hay clases a las 4:30 y a las 3:30 sino solamente a las 3:30.
